Five Eritrean Men Arrested in Connection with Lampedusa Tragedy

Italian police arrested 5 men and issued warrants for 4 more in connection with the Lampedusa drowning incident that left 366 migrants dead in October of last year.

The five Eritrean men arrested were Tesfahiweit Woldu, 24, resident of Agrigento (Italy), Samuel Weldemicael, 26, resident of Agrigento, Salih Mohammed, 24, resident of Agrigento, Matywos Melles, 47, resident of Agrigento, and Nuredin Atta Wehabrebi, 30, resident of Agrigento.

Authorities said arrest warrants were issued for Yared Afwerke, 24, resident of Agrigento, Shamshedin Abkadt (Ethiopian), 29, resident of Milan, Ermies Ghermaye alias Ermiasnato Ghermay (Ethiopian), resident of Tripoli (Libya), and John Maharay, resident of Khartoum (Sudan).

The men are being charged with number of crimes, including crimes of conspiracy, aiding and abetting illegal immigration and residence, and human trafficking, according to reports.

Police said they intercepted thirty thousand calls after the wreck to build a case against this dangerous international human trafficking organization composed of 11 men of Eritrean, Ethiopian, Sudanese and Libyan origins.

Italy's Deputy Minister Lapo Pistelli visits Eritrea

Italy's Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, Lapo Pistelli, visited Eritrea today and met with President Isaias Afwerki.

During their lengthy meeting, the two sides agreed to strengthen bilateral cooperation and coordination on regional matters.

"It's time to start over", said Pistelli at the conclusion of the meeting.

"I wanted to make it clear to President Isaias personally here in Asmara that Italy is ready to show a new willingness, that will certainly enable the mutual trust that has been lacking among us for many, many decades."

The Deputy Minister's visit to Eritrea marks the first time a senior Italian government official has visited the country in over a decade.

What will Drafting a Constitution Mean to the Criminals in the Diaspora?

With one sentence, “I would thus like to announce on this occasion that a constitution drafting process will be launched in order to chart out the political road map for the future governmental structure,” His Excellency President Isaias Afewereki changed the tone, cleared the deck-clean-to-start-fresh and announced to the world that Eritrea will chart her destiny for the people and by the people.

One of the greatest aims of the riffraff is that they hope to incinerate Eritrea, go-back, and start fresh as if innocent. They want to enter Eritrea as if free of crimes with no one to sue them, hold them to account for their crimes.

One of the most brazen tendencies of these sociopaths is that they create their own standards and definitions of democracy, ethics, the rule of law and justice. In their minds, what is against the law in the US is legal when it comes to Eritrea; treason in the US is heroism when it comes to Eritrea.

They fail to see the illegality of betraying Eritrea even when illegally disseminating Martyrs names. Just imagine, what would happen to a US citizen who knows the death of a US soldier that tells the family outside protocol?

They fail to see that it is treason to conspire against the interest of your nation even if it is with the UN. Vandalizing Eritrean embassies’ is not only a crime; it is desecrating the flag that the martyr’s gave their life. Making illegal phone calls to arouse upheaval is immoral but worse it is a terrorist act.

Thinking he will live forever to save their day, these riffraff took turns to take photos with Meles Zenawi the genocide-master that ethnic cleansed over 80,000, killed over 20,000, maiming thousands and displaced a huge chunk of Eritrea. Worshiping the might of the super power they schemed against Eritrea with enemies. They conspire with Ethiopian authorities that are trying to disintegrate Eritrean youth and families to-date.  They conspired to uproot the government of Eritrea and still think that they could ever step foot in Eritrea?

They sponsor-human traffickers, preach ethnic-division and disharmony through their ill-funded websites. They terrorized mothers that wanted to enjoy their national holiday celebrations calling-them names, harassed and in some cases assaulted them.

When did it become legal to threaten-to-kill an official no matter whom or where? When did it become legal to advertise that you will pay reward if any one committed a terrorist act by killing an official in another country? When did it become legal anywhere to encourage youth flight, pay trafficker and brag about it? When did it become legal to make-up stories against Eritrea, threaten, and coerce asylum seekers with deportation if they failed to cooperate? Where is it legal to declare that you will lift arms to fight against your country from enemy’s territories?

Their crimes are endless to mention. These people are gamblers that gamble with everything Eritrea. They gamble with the sovereignty, independence and stability of Eritrea. They gambled with the future of Eritrea’s youth and are responsible for deaths and disappearances of many.

They gambled that it will pay off if they worked on furthering US and Ethiopian agendas at the expense of the people of Eritrea for power grab. In the process they discounted the thousands of lives that Eritrea paid to bring about independence.

These criminals anointed themselves humanitarian, human rights activists, democrats or opposition brazenly and callously hurled insults against Eritrea in collaboration with every Tom Dick and Harry. They mocked Eritrea as a nation without justice as if Eritreans are unlawful, crazy and demented incapable to govern themselves.

These bad gamblers gamble not knowing how, when and where and loose every bet. Their worst gamble however was calling for constitution not knowing how it can affect them; in fact, it was a dumb idea for them because the constitution will hand them their sentences in absentia.

These bad gamblers are clueless, shortsighted and undiplomatic. They associate with any country or anyone as long as it hurts Eritrea. They have short memories. Sudan is a perfect example. These criminals used to think Sudan was their safe haven and used it as a staging ground before making Ethiopia their home.

They gambled that the US and Ethiopia will become victorious and sold Eritrea wished for the reunification with Ethiopia. They believed it is ok to make Addis a second home thinking that the sun will never shine and made Ethiopia their staging grounds for all anti Eritrea activities.

Nations change alliances, situations change based on interests and directions all the time. These changes affect relationships with groups or individuals. Hence it is only a matter of limited time before Ethiopia becomes inaccessible. Sudan could have provided that lesson but this are gamblers that always betted the house for individual gains.

Key

Globally those that want to oppose leaderships, governance, governments or political systems do it by offering concrete solutions with hope of better future. They offer alternatives on governance, political systems, leaderships and economies by selling ways that can better the life of their constituent.

When it comes to Eritrea however it is a different ball game. These criminals want to tear down the history, the legacy of bravery and the fabric of Eritrea’s foundations. They want to tear-apart the unity and fragment the nation. They have nothing good to offer but bad news in every turn. That is because as bad gamblers, they bet that bad things will happen. However, Eritrea keeps proving them wrong. When they say Eritrea is hungry Eritrea proved them wrong and they are fighting the positive trajectories every step of the way.

These are criminals and in no way considered opposition or concerned nationals. Nowhere on earths is possible for a person that conspires with enemies be considered a nationalist and hope to ever be taken seriously. These criminals want to see Eritrea soaked in blood. They want to see Eritrea bleed fighting based on ethnic, regional and religious divide forever. They want to see Syrianaization of Eritrea.

Conclusion 

President Isaias’s statement is a welcome sign that Eritrea is ready to clear deck and thoroughly clean house to ensure that these barking dogs will never see the light of day. This ensures that Eritrea is a dream they will never wake up to see. Drafting a constitutional process will ensure the future legacy that is pristine, unadulterated and uniquely indigenous. It will sift-out the vermin, the filth and the riffraff that pretended to be Eritrean.

Eritrea is a blessed nation and any presence of these vermin on this blessed nation will be a curse that could never be lifted.

Thanks to the gallant defense forces and unwavering commitment of the people, Eritrea will never relent.

Italy Should Lead The effort to Lift Sanctions on Eritrea

Former Assistant Secretary of State, Herman Cohen, wrote an op-ed piece a few months back suggesting that since there is no evidence tying Eritrea to Alshabab in Somalia, the Europeans should sponsor a resolution to lift the sanctions on Eritrea while the United States abstains from voting. That sentiment was echoed by former Ambassador David Shinn in another op-ed piece. Italy is now the current European Union’s Chair for the next six months. As per Deputy Foreign Minister Lapo Pistelli’s comments yesterday while on his current visit to Eritrea, Italy wants to start over and see an improved relationship with Eritrea. There is no better opportunity for Italy and Mr. Pistelli to put their money where their mouth is than by showing  some real leadership on the sanctions issue and sponsoring a resolution to lift the illegal and unjust sanctions that were passed on fraudulent grounds.

If Italy, the former colonial power in Eritrea, truly wants to jump start its relationship with Eritrea and work on issues of mutual concerns in regional peace and stability, there is no better place to start than by using its current chairmanship and bringing along its European partners on lifting the sanctions. Although it is possible that Susan Rice will interfere with a phone call and screw it all up, Italy should find it easier to work with the current Permanent US Representative, Samantha Power, who doesn’t have Susan Rice’s baggage and is reportedly not passionate about keeping the sanctions on Eritrea.

Italy has its own self interest in trying to do this. Since the fall of Muamar Qaddafi, who was seen as a “dictator” by the West, Italy has been swamped by African boat migrants crossing the Mediterranean through Libya. Italy is paying for the absolute breakdown in security and complete lawlessness that has engulfed post-Qaddafi Libya and allowed human smuggling to flourish in that country. Many of those African boat migrants, particularly those who hail from the Horn countries, claim to be from Eritrea even though they have never set foot in Eritrea because they know it easier to get political asylum as an Eritrean.

If Italy is to stem the continuous flow of boat migrants on to its shores, it has to work to improve conditions in the Horn of Africa that are leading to the migration. At the heart of the Horn’s instability is the Ethio-Eritrean relationship and Ethiopia’s continued illegal occupation of sovereign Eritrean territory and its refusal to abide by the Hague decision combined with the illegal and reverse-logic sanctions that have been passed on fraudulent grounds to try to punish Eritrea. Italy can use its current chairmanship of the European Union to show some leadership on this issue.

LEAKED MEMO REVEALS ETHIOPIA’S DESTABILIZATION POLICY 
AGAINST ERITREA

(EXCERPTS)

The Ethiopian State Minister for Foreign Affairs Ambassador Berhane Gebrekiristos on 20 February 2014 (13 yekatit 2006) sent a Memo in Amharic to all Ethiopian Diplomatic Missions, with specific Instructions and Action Plans on how to Destabilize and Economically and Militarily weaken Eritrea. Read the full text of the Amharic leaked memo:


The Leaked Memo, among other things, clearly exposes:-

a. Ethiopia’s purported agenda of “weakening and destabilizing Eritrea” and its diversionary tactics to perpetuate its occupation of sovereign Eritrean territories including the town of Badme;

b. Ethiopian government’s fear over the increasing awareness of the international community about the positive and the true content of Eritrea’s economic and regional integration policies;

c. On how to present the sanction as an IGAD initiative so that it cannot be seen as an Ethiopian request; and to influence the intelligence agencies of the countries in the region so that they can echo Ethiopia’s baseless assertions;

d. On how Ethiopia’s occupation of sovereign Eritrean territories, including the town of Badme, can be avoided from being considered as the root cause of instability in the Horn of Africa;

e. On who in the US government has been playing a leading and crucial role on sanctioning and “marginalizing” Eritrea;

f. On how the Somalia Eritrea Monitoring Group (SEMG) was fed false information by Ethiopian intelligence and military establishments and is being manipulated and used to disseminate baseless accusations and disinformation about Eritrea;

g. On what actions and measures Ethiopian diplomats must take in order to defend the credibility of SEMG as well as to maintain and enhance their amicable relationship with SEMG;

Excerpts from the Leaked Memo:

I.On Eritrea’s Diplomatic engagement and the need for a New Diplomatic Approach 

Ethiopia was instrumental in the imposition of sanctions on Eritrea. We have cooperated with members of IGAD; and, have been at the forefront of the efforts at the African Union and the United Nations. However, after the sanctions were adopted, we did not take full ownership of the issue and relentlessly work to ensure its full implementation. In light of Eritrea’s ongoing diplomatic activities to lift the sanctions, if we don’t work vigorously and fail to ensure the strengthening and continuity of the sanctions, then all our past efforts to isolate and weaken Eritreawill be in vein. Therefore, there is a need to implement a “new approach” in our diplomatic activities.

Eritrea is actively engaged with the international community. President Isaias visited Kenya and Sudan. During President Kenyatta’s inauguration, he met with the Presidents of South Sudan, Tanzania and D.R. Congo. The Eritrean Presidential Advisor Mr. Yemane Gebrab met in Paris with the Chairman of the Sanctions Committee (Permanent Representative of Korea) and the Monitoring Group. The UN officials, OCHA and UNDP, visited Eritrea and in unprecedented manner the Organization is showing keenness to cooperate with Eritrea, including on political matters. All these developments could harm and affect the sanctions imposed on Eritrea.

Today, some are arguing that the Eritrean government is showing interest to engage the international community, and that the sanctions are hurting the population not the government. Such views have been expressed by the former US Assistant Secretary for Africa, Herman Cohen, and similar views are entertained in the U.S. Congress and the Council for Foreign Relations. Many countries, especially the developing ones, are against imposing sanctions on developing countries. Moreover, the support Eritrea received during the presentation of its national report under UPR in Geneva cannot be underestimated. Uganda spoke in support of Eritrea during UPR presentation, which must be closely observed.

The sanctions which have at the least helped marginalize Eritrea are being challenged. The success of Eritrea’s ongoing diplomatic activities to lift the sanctions can have serious repercussions. However, as long as the US, the penholder, hasn’t changed its position, there is no danger of the sanctions being lifted. The possibility that the sanctions can be further watered down and become tooth-less should not rule-out.

Therefore, we must approach Embassies and International Organizations in Addis Ababa; the UN Secretariat, and Ministries of Foreign Affairs in the relevant countries to expose/convince that Eritrea’s current diplomatic activity is not a sign of real behavioural change but a deceptive charm offensive for the sanction to be lifted. We must actively lobby for the sanctions not to be lifted, and push for its full
implementation and further strengthening.

II. On IGAD: 
The imposition of sanctions on Eritrea materialised due to the unity that existed within IGAD. If the unity of IGAD is eroded, the matter will be seen as an issue between Eritrea and Ethiopia, and the international community could lean towards accepting Eritrea’s narrative that the root cause of all the problems is the Border Issue. We have to strengthen our effort to prevent this from happening. The challenge is portraying our activities against Eritrea as an IGAD initiative. This must be taken as a top priority.

In this regard:
a. we must work with Djibouti and Kenya to strengthen the unity within IGAD; and,

b. we must constantly provide information to the security and intelligence agencies of the countries of the region so that they will understand and explain Eritrea’s destabilizing role in the region.

III. On SEMG
The Reports of the SEMG has been key in ensuring the continuity as well as the strengthening of the sanctions against Eritrea. But as of late the integrity of the SEMG and the credibility of its reports are being challenged by many countries. Eritrea in particular has ridiculed the reports of the Group. Some members of the Security Council such as Russia and Pakistan labelled the report ‘unbalanced’. Italy, Norway, Kenya and Somalia who were mentioned in the report also criticized the Group. The Group’s reports exposed the rampant corruption in the Somali Government and the involvement of the Kenyan soldiers in the charcoal trade in Kismayo. The Somali Government wrote a letter to the UNSG requesting the chair of the group to be fired, while Kenya declared members of the Group persona-non-grata and denied frequent requests for an entry visa to one of the members. These situations coupled with Eritrea’s consistent assertion that the group lacks neutrality and is an instrument of Ethiopia and U.S. could hurt the credibility the Group.

We must:-
a. facilitate the resolution of the misunderstandings the group has with Kenya and Somalia,

b. provide information to the SEMG on Eritrea’s violations of the sanctions and make sure the information is included in the reports of the Group presented to the UNSC,

c. lobby member states of the UNSC to accept the reports of the SEMG as credible,

d. lobby members of the UNSC to accept the recommendations of the SEMG on  strengthening the sanctions; and,

e. obtain advance copies of the reports of the SEMG and the UN Secretary-General on the implementation of the sanctions;

f. develop close relations with the relevant departments in the UN Secretariat in order to ensure that the reports are in line with our position, or at least don’t hurt our position.

IV. On the Role of the UN Security Council Members, in particular the US: The P3 Countries have been supportive of the sanctions against Eritrea. The United States played a crucial role in the adoption of UNSC resolutions 1907 and 2023. The former U.S. Permanent Representative to UN, Ambassador Susan Rice, was instrumental in adopting the resolutions. The current US Permanent Representative, Ambassador Samantha Power, may not be as strong on Eritrea.But since Ambassador Susan Rice is serving as the National Security Advisor of  President Obama, she will ensure the continuation of U.S’s policy of sanctioning Eritrea. 

United Kingdom has supported the sanctions in the past, and has taken positions similar to that of the U.S. Meetings with the UK Permanent Representative, hasconfirmed that the UK will not change its position regarding the sanctions against Eritrea or the SEMG.

France has supported the imposition of sanctions against Eritrea, primarily due to the conflict with Djibouti.

Russia while supporting the first resolution, in the second resolution not only abstained but has also worked with China and South Africa to water-down the resolution. The position Russia undertook with regards to the second resolution is not related to its relations with Ethiopia but the condition in the Council after  Libya and Côte d'Ivoire. Our country has historical relations with Russia since the Soviet Union, and it is our view that Russia will not support the lifting of sanctions against Eritrea, but if Eritrea’s efforts to lift sanction get the support of Russia in light of the existing confrontation with P3 in the Council then our diplomatic activities will face great danger.

China asserts that it opposes sanctions in principle, in reality it has economic and other interests with Eritrea, thus doesn’t want to offend Eritrea. China opposed the listing of Eritrea’s military and political leaders by the Council as well as the measures to control the finances of the mining companies that are investing in Eritrea. We must convince Chinese government that there is no linkage between the sanctions regime and the Ethiopia and Eritrea border issue. If Eritrea’s efforts at engaging the international community continues and its efforts to lift the sanctions receive the support of Russia and China, the permanent members of the UNSC could be divided and our past efforts will be in vein.

Nigeria will support our efforts to ensure the implementation and strengthening of the sanctions. Even though the Eritrean president has participated in itsIndependence Day celebration in 2011, we don’t believe Chad will be supportive of Eritrea’s effort to lift the sanctions. Rwanda hasn’t been forthcoming in providing information regarding Eritrea. However, if Eritrea gets the support of one African member in the UNSC, it could cause serious damage to the sanctions.

Lithuania has a good relationship with the US and as a member of the European Union it tends to implement the common position of the Union. We believe that this could be helpful in our effort to implement and strengthen the sanctions on Eritrea. We do not believe it will have a strong role in supporting our activities to maintain and strengthen the sanctions imposed on Eritrea, but it won’t take actions that damage Ethiopia’s position.

Argentina and Luxemburg have no meaningful participation or contribution in the UNSC.

Australia and South Korea tends take positions similar to that of the US.

Jordan has assigned non-resident Ambassador to Eritrea. It is important to approach Jordan and explain the need to maintain and implement the sanctions imposed on Eritrea. Chile, during its previous membership of UNSC, had expressed its opinion concerning the border issue between Eritrea and Ethiopia. It has stated that in accordance to international law Eritrea has a legitimate demand and legal case. We have to work closely with

Chile to make the country understand our position and provide support for the maintenance and implementations of the sanctions imposed on Eritrea.

In this context, we must:-


a. actively work to convince members of the Council that there is no real change of behaviour from Eritrea and that they must expedite the implementation of the “due diligence” guidelines to control Eritrea’s revenues from the mining,

b. work with the SEMG, to convince members states of the UNSC to expedite the adoption of due diligence guidelines to control the money Eritrea gets from the mining sector,

c. check the status on the listing of Eritrean officials by the UNSC and provide ideas on the way forward,

d. request countries to enact laws and take administrative measures to tighten their control on Eritrea’s use of the Diaspora tax; and

e. urge member states to submit reports on the implementation of the sanctions


Eritrea’s Conclusion and Observations on the Leaked Document

The Leaked Document from the State Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ethiopia illustrates without a shred of doubt that Ethiopia remains wedded to a dangerous and myopic strategy of perpetual destabilisation and demonization of Eritrea. Ethiopia is not, apparently, interested in respecting its treaty obligations and international law as well as cultivating good neighbourly ties with Eritrea for the benefits of both peoples and for the enhancement of peace and security in the wider Horn of Africa region.Ethiopia’s politics is indeed dominated by a zero-sum game and by subterfuges and subtle tools of disinformation and manipulation to advance its policy of destabilisation and confrontation. Indeed, Ethiopia has gone to extreme lengths and employed unorthodox methods in pursuit of these objectives. In this vein, for the last seven years Ethiopia has shown reluctance to relinquish its chairmanship of IGAD in order to abuse its position to block Eritrea’s reactivation of is lawful membership and participation in this regional organisation. In Ethiopia’s short-sighted view, this would imbue it with added leverage to railroad unwarranted resolutions against Eritrea.

Ethiopia’s manoeuvrings, however malicious, would not have amounted to anything without the vigorous support and collusion of the United States Government. The fact is Ethiopia has neither a regional or global clout to defy international law or ram through unwarranted sanctions against Eritrea without the financial, diplomatic, and political support of the United States. To blame or give credit to Ethiopia would be to miss the point.

Therefore, it is about time that the unjust and illegal sanction against Eritrea is lifted unconditionally and without any delay. Ethiopia must also be urged to respect its treaty obligations and to withdraw from the sovereign Eritrean territories, including the town of Badme.

Eritrea: Commemorating 40th anniversary of Bologna Festival

Today the 40th anniversary of Bologna has kicked off with vibrant participation of Eritreans from all walks of life and age and from all corners of the world. For many the occasion would be a platform to go back to the early days of the festival and remember the happy days, the days of determination of every one participant to contribute his/her part in the Eritrean struggle for independence, and above all the unity of the Eritrean people that has been demonstrated there. And some are there to learn and listen to what has been going on in Bologna festival in the days of the armed struggle, the role of Eritreans in Diaspora, Eritrean nationals coming together in one compound in the city to discuss the objective situation in the field and their contribution towards the armed struggle. Indeed they have a lot to learn and gain experience that could add impetus to their ongoing role in the process of nation building.

The inception of Bologna festival began with the gathering of few Eritreans in 1970 in Munich, Germany. That was not as such a festival in its latest form but a kind of congress in which the Eritrean nationals come together to discuss the situation in the Homeland and the progress of the armed struggle. In 1972 with the birth of the People’s Forces the same gathering of Eritreans had been conducted there for the second time. And in 1973 in Pavia (Italy). That has been from here that the idea of conducting yearly festivals in Bologna has been initiated. Hence, from 1974 up to 1991, the total independence of Eritrea, every year in August Eritrean Festival has been conducted in Bologna.

The Bologna Festival has had a dual role. First it has been an occasion in which every Eritrean irrespective of ethnicity and religion come to gather for one and one objective. To express resolve that they would do anything to their capacity to show the wide world that the Eritrean struggle for independence had not been the responsibility of the few that were sacrificing their lives for the nation but also it was every Eritrean’s desire and determination wherever they are. Secondly, Eritreans have been coming to Bologna with the aim to contribute their share for the development of the armed struggle. Hence, Bologna festival has been playing in unifying resolve and commitment of the Eritrean people to the cause of their country.

Every year cultural troupes come to Bologna not only to entertain the participants but also with their presentation directly and indirectly inform the audience with the progress of the armed struggle. The songs and drams they used to present used to tell their stories; major victories of the struggle and the weakening of the enemy by the day. Seminars by senior leaders of the EPLF have been also conducted. Those seminars have been essential to the festival participants to exactly understand where the revolution is heading and the achievements so far gained both militarily and diplomatically.

This year’s Bologna festival is being conducted to commemorate the 40th anniversary of the festival commencement. From 1974 to 2014 is exactly 40 years. In these three days festival the participants would not only concentrate on the past events of the festival. They would have the opportunity to get first hand information on the current economic, social and political situation in the Homeland through the seminars and lectures that would be conducted. Moreover, the participants would have the opportunity to transfer the good cultural values that has been demonstrated in the past festivals to the young generation that are participating for the first time. The experience on how to challenge external conspiracies and come out victorious and to tell the youth that such a character has been the Eritrean culture for long, during the armed struggle for independence until to date.

Bologna: A Nostalgic Return to Eritrea’s Second City

Thousands of Eritreans descended on Bologna this past week to celebrate the 40th Anniversary of the Bologna Summer Festivals and pay homage to Eritrea’s liberation era spirit of brotherhood, dedication and commitment to the liberation of Eritrea.  It was a nostalgic return to a city that was once declared by its mayor as “Eritrea’s capital city until the liberation of Asmara.” For all intents and purposes, Bologna was Eritrea’s second city, after Nakfa, from 1974 to 1991. This week’s Bologna reunion must have been a trip down memory lane or “a blast from the past” as we say in America for multiple generations of Eritreans who used to attend those liberation era festivals with all their excitement and anticipation.

Those young men and women who used to toil day and night as taxi drivers and maids donated most of their earnings to the EPLF so that their tegadelti brothers and sisters back in the “field” could have provisions.  Those patriots have now become senior citizens and can proudly look back nostalgically to the contributions they made to the struggle in their youth. The children of those patriots who grew up attending those festivals have now become young adults and have taken over the leadership responsibilities of Eritrean Community Centers in the diaspora. Following in the footsteps of their parents, they are organizing, directing and leading Eritrean Community Centers in Europe, the Americas and the Middle East.

For those of us who never attended the Bologna Festivals, we knew Bologna from videos and classics such as Habte Shawel’s “Susas Alata.” In the pre-internet era, festival goers eagerly awaited for news from the liberated areas and were briefed by EPLF representatives from the field.  The saying “Dehai Adi haba” was more than just fodder for the comedic geniuses of Habte Shawel.

Bologna is once again attended by those representatives from the field who have now become ministers,  liberation era entertainers that kept up the morale of the fighters and young and old patriots. Young and old patriots alike can wax nostalgic and reminisce about the liberation era feats that were accomplished while renewing and re-doubling their commitment to the Eritrean State.  Bologna will always be Eritrea’s second city!

(KHARTOUM) - A Sudanese court ordered the 600 people who attempted recently to migrate illegally to Libya to pay a fine or serve several months in jail after being rescued by the army last week.

The total amount of fines sentenced by the North Sudan's Dongola tribunal reached 40,000 Sudanese pound ($4,800). The courts also ordered to repatriate the foreigners, mostly Eritreans and Ethiopians to their respective countries.

A joint Sudanese Libyan border force rescued last week over six hundreds illegal migrants and transported them to Dongola, capital of North state.

The Sudanese authorities said traffickers had abandoned them in the desert in miserable conditions.

Police authorities in Dongola said a significant number of the victims are Eritrean and Ethiopian.

Sudanese and East African nationals used in the past to go to Israel or apply for asylum in Western countries from Egypt.

However, Libya becomes recently a favourite destination for immigrants who want to reach Europe by boats through the Mediterranean Sea.

Last June, Libyan guards killed a dozen migrants who had illegally crossed the border from Sudan.

Why I Left the Eritrean Opposition

After watching the Egyptian Revolution in 2011, I naively joined the Eritrean opposition seeking a similar outcome in Eritrea. At the time, I thought the opposition was an alternative group that genuinely worked for the betterment of Eritrea and Eritreans. Unfortunately, from my experiences, it is nothing more than a dysfunctional organization that has less to do with bettering the country and people, and more to do about appeasing Ethiopia.

From the beginning, I was alarmed by the opposition's close ties to the Ethiopian regime. In fact, most of the major  political positions the opposition has adopted over the years came from the Ethiopian government. From the anti-2% Diaspora tax to seeking federalism (regionalism) in Eritrea to supporting sanctions against the country, these positions, and more, were hatched in Mekelle first, and later became rallying cries of the opposition.

To give an analogy during this blessed month of Ramadan, Mecca is to Muslims as Mekelle is to the Eritrean opposition. Every 'important' opposition member must make a pilgrimage to Ethiopia to stay relevant. And it doesn't matter if they are secular intellectuals seeking democracy or Islamic extremists seeking to establish Shariah law; their common denominator is their unyielding support for the Ethiopian dictatorship.

Moreover, another issue I have about the opposition is how they take their name so seriously. Many of them literally seem to be in opposition of just about anything Eritrean, including relationships.

For example, three summers ago, my friend, who isn't involved in politics, met this lovely girl at an Eritrean event. When her father noticed she was becoming serious with him, he asked for his father's name. After realizing his father supported the Government of Eritrea, he told her to stop seeing him and threatened to disown her if she refused. Long story short, he ruined his relationship with his daughter and soon to be son-in-law, over his demented hatred for the GoE that they had nothing to do with.

That might have been one extreme example, but it's not a stretch to claim there is this perverse, schadenfreude feeling towards Eritreans that most opposition members seem to have. They claim they support Eritrea and Eritreans, yet the only time they celebrate is when something bad happens to the country or its citizens. That's like claiming your a fan of one particular team and only cheering when they are losing or performing badly. And as any sports fans knows, that is not a fan; that's a rival.

In my three years as a member of the opposition, I can not think of one instance in which we had civil debates that accommodated opposing ideas that didn't end in insults in broken English. The conversation was always limited to Eritrea is bad, Ethiopia is great, refugees, dictatorship, Isaias, Isaias, Isaias and if we had more time, they took it back to Paltalk to talk more about Isaias. We also didn't discuss helping Eritreans back home. The conversation focused on ways to sabotage the economy, and on ways to lure Eritrean youth to leave the country so self-proclaimed human rights activists like Selam Kidane and Meron Estefanos can use their misfortune to collect money on their behalf, and condemn the government for a situation they helped create.

Ironically, some of the more intellectually stimulating conversations and debates I've had about Eritrean politics have come from YPFDJ members. And unlike the opposition, they were actively engaging in civil debates on how the country should move forward, and were more than welcoming to opposing ideas. They also had meetings on ways to help people back home. These experiences and more with YPFDJ members made realize I was definitely on the wrong team.

In the end, I left the opposition because they were more focused with spreading gossip and mayhem than ideas and solutions. This isn't to say all of those in the opposition are bad people, because there are some good people who truly have good intentions. Unfortunately, these people are silenced or ridiculed because their opinions don't harmonize with the the shot callers in Addis Ababa.

Although I no longer consider myself an opposition member, I still want the government to make much needed changes within the confines of national security. If the Arab Spring has taught us anything, it is rapid change of a government causes protracted instability and devastates the economy. Therefore, we should continue to encourage the government to implement the constitution as swiftly as possible, while at the same time, resisting opportunist in the oppositions who want to remove the government.

As one Eritrean eloquently put it: "change must come to Eritrea but it must come gradually. Heavy rain following drought does not nourish the plant but instead erodes the topsoil."

Oil and natural gas reserves have been 'confirmed' in Eritrea - AFdB


In their annual African Economic Outlook, the African Development Bank states there is confirmed presence of commercially viable reserves of oil and natural gas in Eritrea.

"In addition, geological studies have confirmed the presence of oil and natural-gas reserves in commercial quantities." 

The news comes five months after a group of British businessmen led by former UK conservative Chairman Michael Howard arrived in Eritrea to explore investment opportunities in the exploration of hydrocarbon and natural resource in the country.

Eritrea has been tight-lipped about the presence of oil and natural gas, but during a 2009 interview with Awsat, President Isaias Afwerki did reveal there is a "large reserve (of oil)" in the country.

Regionally, Kenya, Uganda, Sudan, South Sudan, and Somalia are at different stages of extraction of petroleum after foreign companies discovered commercially viable oil and gas in their respective countries.

ANDARGACHEW TSIGE, an exiled Ethiopian opposition leader with British nationality, could be facing the death penalty after apparently being arrested and sent back to his country of origin while on a trip to the Gulf. While transiting in Yemen on June 23rd, during a journey from Dubai to Eritrea, Andargachew mysteriously ended up on a plane to Ethiopia. Andargachew was charged by the Ethiopian authorities with terrorism and sentenced, in absentia, to death, at two separate trials between 2009 and 2012. Following post-election protests in 2005 he had fled the country and been granted asylum in Britain, where he created Ginbot 7, a leading opposition movement.

Now in the hands of the state which had legally prepared for his execution, his family are concerned about Andargachew’s safety. “The British embassy has still not been granted consular access,” says his wife, Yemisrach Hailemariam, who lives in London. “We are deeply concerned he is being tortured and they will wait for his wounds to be healed before anyone can see him.”

There are concerns that Yemen’s government did not follow the correct procedures for extradition. It is believed that Andargachew was arrested and flown to Addis Ababa without British officials being formally alerted. According to Anand Doobay, an extradition expert at Peters & Peters, a law firm, under the Vienna Convention on Consular Relations the British embassy should have been notified that one of its citizens was being detained and given the chance to visit him. “Sometimes there is no legal extradition process and then there is a risk that rendition can take place following informal contact between police forces,” he says.

In recent years Ethiopia has conducted several extraditions with varying degrees of legality. Recently Okello Okuway, a Norwegian national, was arrested in South Sudan and extradited to Ethiopia. In June he was brought to court and faces terrorism charges. Prior to that Kenya detained and extradited two Ethiopian members of the Oromo ethnic group accused of having links to Oromo rebels, who were then sentenced to life in prison. One of them died in 2013 serving his term. Kenya also detained and sent a Canadian passport holder back to Ethiopia, where he faces terrorism charges for alleged links rebels from the Ogaden region. Human Rights Watch states that various other political refugees have been sent back from neighbouring countries.

“The region has always been dangerous for political activists,” says Jawar Mohammed, an Ethiopian political commentator based in America. “However, in the past kidnapping or assassinations were carried out by the Ethiopian security. Now such action is being undertaken by security services of the neighboring countries. This makes it extremely dangerous.” He believes that Yemeni officials may have been eager to take a knock at the government of Eritrea, Andargachew’s destination, because of the ongoing conflict between Yemen and Eritrea over the Hanish islands in the Red Sea.

Now that Andargachew is on Ethiopian soil, where he is considered a terrorist, his fate remains uncertain. His wife has called on the British government to step up their efforts. “If the British government allows Ethiopia to get away with kidnapping its citizen in international territory and stands by as they continue to torture, detain, and potentially execute my husband, then it sets a very bad precedent for the security of any Brit travelling abroad,” she says. British diplomats say they are demanding access to Andargachew, so far without success.

For more than two decades, the perilous beast of Woyene’s regime of Ethiopia has perpetually caused unprecedented mayhem and prevalent humanitarian crisis on peaceful citizens and nations in the Horn of Africa. Unfortunately, countless of innocent lives have been perished under the butcher’s teeth of beast’s regime (TPLF). Furthermore, the beast’s regime has repeatedly shown the International Communities that neither it has moral obligations nor nobility to respect the fundamental rights of sovereignty of Eritrea and Somalia, and the fundamental rights of its citizens as well. The beast of Woyene’s regime, beside his butcher’s teeth, has a blanket immunity under his belly from Developed Countries to label anyone (human beings or animals) with terrorism.

Shedding Crocodile Tears: The beast’s regime has been given an unconditional immunity from the International Communities to butcher citizens of Horn of Africa under umbrella of terrorism for more than two decades. Thousands of innocent lives have been perished under the belly of the beast’s regime because they were perceived to be terrorists. For more than two decades, the beast’s regime has used pseudo-terrorism’s tears to invade its neighbor nations, such as Eritrea and Somalia, and to sentence thousands of innocent lives to perish in abhorrent jails because they were perceived to be terrorists for the nation of Ethiopia and for the world. Once the beast’s regime has shown the pseudo- terrorism’s tear, the International Communities would not only give it an immense immunity from prosecution but also would give it millions of dollars in aid. Very startling!

See No Evil, Hear No evil, and Speak No Evil: Apparently, the International Communities have buried their moral responsibility and its nobility to stop the beast’s regime. The savaged beast’s regime has roamed throughout the Horn of Africa for more than two decades, and it has created mammoth humanitarian crisis, invading nation’s sovereignty, abducting human beings and animals as well, hunting and butchering journalists and human rights activists. However, the International Communities have continuously funded millions of dollars of aid to the beast’s regime because it’s an alliance country for fighting a terrorism. Preposterous! Despite of the substantial evidences that the beast’s regime has been dishonest from the beginning to the world, yet the International Communities have clearly chosen a path of turning its eyes away and shutting its ears from thousandths of victims of Ethiopians, Somalis and Eritrea’s nation.

A freedom-fighter Andargachew Tseige has been a recently victim of the beast’s regime in Ethiopia. Unfortunately, Mr. Andargachew, who is the citizen of United Kingdom, was arrested while transiting from International Airport of Sana, Yemen.(1) Subsequently he was extradited to the beast’s regime of Ethiopia. Perhaps Mr. Andargachew’s incident could be an unprecedented International Aviation violation of human rights on huge scale that the world has witnessed on June, 2014.  However, the citizens of Horn of Africa are not astonished by the appalling character of the beast’s regime (TPLF). Since the helm of beast’s regime, the citizens and nations of Horn of Africa have been perpetually victimized for more than two decades. The arrest of freedom-fighter Andargachew Tseig which it has signified the turning point that beast’s regime of Ethiopia has manifested itself into untouchable International beast who has retained an unconditional immunity of clouds from the International Communities. Help!

According to South Sudan President Kiir, “I signed the agreement because the Ethiopian Prime Minister threatened to arrest us. He said if you don't sign it, I will arrest you from here."(2) Indeed, the President of South Sudan was a fortune to escape from the belly of beast’s regime. Perhaps the world was startled that the President of South Sudan was coerced to sign the paper but the citizens of Horn of Africa were not astonished by the savaged beast’s regime dishonorable character. Not even the president is immune from the belly of beast’s regime. Help!

Proverb said, “Calamity is not allowed to overwhelm the righteous, but there is nothing but trouble waiting for wicked.” The beast’s regime of TPLF has indeed a powerful pseudo terrorism’s tear to show the world when it’s butchering innocent victims. The dangerous beast’s regime has terrorized the citizens of Horn of Africa for more than two decades. Eritrea government and Eritrean people were the first victim of beast’s regime. The beast’s regime under pseudo-terrorism’s tear has futilely attempted to invade Eritrea. For more than a decade, Eritrean’s villages on the borders of Ethiopia have constantly been victimized by the beast’s regime. The beast’s regime would steal live-stocks from the Eritrean farmers and abducting young girls to rape them. For more than a decade, the beast’s regime has constantly harassed the Eritrean government on local levels and international levels. Despite of the immense harassments by the beast’s regime, Eritrean government has taken prudent and brilliant approaches of avoiding a full-scale war with the beast’s regime. Secondly, the Woyene’s regime has been an incubator of producing perpetual horrors on the citizens of Ogaden, Gambella, Anuuk tribe, Oromia, Amhara, Afar, and Somalia. By his crocodile pseudo- terrorism’s tear, the beast’s regime was able to install his continuous horrors, of butchering innocent lives, rapping young and elderly women, chronic corruptions, pathological liars, ethnic cleansing, land’s grabilization… on the beautiful and proud people who have a noble history since the cradle of human-kind in Africa. Help!

According to Dalai Lama, “When we have inner peace, we can be at peace with those around us. When our community is in a state of peace, it can share that peace with neighboring communities." The International Communities are bounded by utmost moral obligation of humanity and universal nobility to make this world serene environs in which all living creatures and human beings have alienable rights to live in harmony and peaceful state of mind. In addition, the International Communities are indeed compelled to render universal actions against the butcher’s regime (TPLF) who has manifested itself into wild and dangerous beast in Horn of Africa and Gulf of Eden as well. History has illustrated to the world that Hitler’s regime had come to an end because the International Communities have taken decisively action against the regime once it had manifested itself into dangerous beast in the universe. Therefore, the International Communities must swiftly take a punitive measurement against the wild beast’s regime (TPLF), who has gained blanket immunity from Developed Countries, before more innocent lives continued to perish under his belly. Time is an essence to contain the loose wild beast’s regime of TPLF before it’s too late for the citizens of Horn of Africa. HELP US!

Asmara's city center needs a facelift

Asmara today, although still beautiful, is not where it should be. I recently asked someone who returned from Eritrea to get his thoughts of the city. He said:

 "Asmara's city center has seen better days", which is his nice way of saying the city administrators haven't done their jobs properly.

He added that he doesn't understand why Harnet (Liberation) Ave and its adjacent streets are allowed to have buildings, sidewalks and roads that are in poor shape when these areas are the pulse of the country.

He's right.

There is no excuse for the city's administrators to allow buildings in and around Harnet Ave to look rundown. It reflects poorly on the government, and also makes visitors less likely to return, which hurts the country financially, since Asmara's city center is the moneymaker in terms of tourism in the country.

To be fair, the city administrators inherited Asmara after it was neglected for 50 years by previous British and Ethiopian administrations. So the deterioration of the buildings, sidewalks and roads was already present long before it was their turn to manage it.

The administrators of Asmara have also started adding improvements to beautify the city this past year. Recently, a community recreational center costing 6 million Nakfa was constructed in the Gejeret Administrative area of Asmara, while a park in the Edaga-Hamus sub-zone of the city received renovations costing 5.5 million Nakfa. Additionally, Asmara's Mai Jah Jah Fountain and its environs are being renovated at a cost of more than 8 million Nakfa (US$532,000).

I know some people reading this are thinking we have bigger issues to spend than beautifying Asmara, but I disagree. Think of the last time you wore a nice looking new outfit and how that made you feel? Did it not make you feel more confident and put you in a better mood? On the other side of the coin, think of the last time you wore something you felt was awful, how did that make you feel? Usually crummy, right? Well, that's the point i'm making. How we present ourselves to the world, regardless if its the clothes on our backs or the city's we live in, impacts our moods and behaviors. So it's important we make sure the city is looking good.

If money is an issue, as it always seems to be the case with states that invest heavily in social services, then the government should focus on the little things to improve the city center. By that I mean the government should provide buildings on Harnet Ave and its adjacent streets with plaster, a fresh coat of paint, and should replace the outdated sidewalks in these areas with something more modern. This will change the appearance of this area significantly while still keeping costs relatively low.

Ultimately, if the city administrators want to maintain any future improvements to the city center's appearance, they should consider passing a law that makes the building owners pay a fine if their building isn't well maintained. To do this, they should create a team of qualified building inspectors to check annually on the conditions these buildings. If they fail the inspections, they should be given a fine, and that money can be used towards its improvement by the state.

First world cities need first world human behaviors 

Any improvement to Asmara's appearance must be accompanied by improvements of the people's behavior. That means a ban on all livestock and other animals in the city should be enforced. Nothing screams 3rd world than a donkey aimlessly walking passed you just a few streets from Harnet Ave. Additionally, police need to issue fines for people who litter, jaywalk, urinate, and who don't follow traffic rules. Just because we're a developing country does not mean we have to behave like one.

As you can see from these relatively new pictures from Asmara, the city could use some minor work like new sidewalks, more jacaranda and palm trees, plaster and paint work to make it look like its former glory.

Winnipeg's pseudo human rights activist, Ghirmay Yeibio. He's been selling lies to the Canadian regime about Eritrea for his beloved dictatorship in Ethiopia.  The irony is he doesn't even believe in Eritrea's independence, and is quite vocal in seeking Eritrea under Ethiopia's occupation, yet he presents himself as an 'Eritrean human rights activist' to pay his bills. This is the 'opposition' in a nutshell.

In a June 22nd 2014 CBC interview, a representative from Hidmona, a bandwagon Eritrean Human Rights activists registered in Manitoba, stated that the closure of the Eritrean Consulate in Toronto was way overdue. He, along with his coteries seize the opportunity to demand the government of Canada close the consulate altogether.

The paradoxical request is not short of the comico-tragic nature of the group that masked as a Human Rights Organization that attempts to politicize and divide the existing communities and use them as a spring board to sway any opposition against the Eritrean government. The process though of the alleged Human Rights activity is highly politicized and in an unusual oxymoron directed to destroy their very own communities and existing Eritrean Consulate Services.

Let us see some of the practices witnessed in the last 3 years by the above group:

  • Started their opposition by demonizing the very nature of their own communities and branding the communities as sources and funders of terrorism and/or terrorism linked organizations

  • Attacked prominent community leaders on a personal basis

  •  Introduced the notion of anti-Semitism against their own community and people, put Canadian Eritrean organizations at risk by introducing notions of hate and crime

  • The founders of these organization and many of its members are the beneficiaries of the 2% diaspora tax and product of the free education that they generously received in Eritrea with the help of the Eritrean Diaspora but now calling their benefactors as sources of terrorism

  • Crossed several times the line of political activism and jumped in to anti-Eritrean politics by requesting to close the mining industry for the purpose of weakening Eritrea economically;  support brain drain and human trafficking

  • Allowed “Eritrean masked” Ethiopian regime organizations and individuals to act within them and direct their political actions and reactions in order to harm Eritrea and Eritrean interests

  • Requested the closure of the Eritrean Consulate in Toronto in total disregard of the harm on the services of many Canadian Eritreans who receive services ranging from simple family visit, legal matters, property claim and burial of family members

  • Used white lies to demonize community leaders and members by misrepresenting the Eritrean community from a cohesive, hard working and law abiding to a polarized, divided and source of hate and terrorism

  • They falsely claim families of the 2% tax evaders are subject to extra – judicial pressure; distorting community leaders role’s and real service to communities

  • Have converted their own ethno-cultural communities to places of communal distrust and social isolation and marginalization

  • Have cut the ties and network of newcomers and members with a significant impact to cross members assistance and collective youth raising, with detrimental effects on inter-generational tension and putting at risk the healthy cross–cultural growth of our youth

  • By continuous demonization of the traditional communities, they have cut the youth from collective cultural activities, sports, music and have instilled the notion that as Eritrean Canadians we are linked to terrorism
  • Strong Supporters of the UN arms embargo against Eritrea in total disregard of the continuous militarization and mobilization of Ethiopia and favoring the arms balance to Ethiopia’s interests . Ignoring the risks for the Eritrean Defence Forces and Eritrea’s ability to self defence.

  • Never condemned the continuous Ethiopian occupation of Eritrean territory and never advocated for any Canadian intervention or International action to ensure that Eritrean history of securing national issues goes along all political stripes. In complete opposition and disrespect of the Eritrean people deal on a daily basis with the Occupier Ethiopia and organize events and frequent visits to Ethiopia

  • Never condemned the destruction of the Eritrean Community in Sweden by like-minded arsonists

  • Openly supporting acts of gangsterism in their own Embassies around the world and acting as gangsters by demonstrating in front of community members residences; spreading fear of terrorism to Canadians by distributing flyers in residential areas where community members live

  • Requested that Eritrean Musicians Korchach and musical groups be removed from a hotel where he was resting as they misinformed hotel owners as having sheltered terrorists

  • Attempted repeatedly to demonize prominent Eritrean leaders and respected Independence era leaders as people that should be inadmissible in Canada due to acts of subversion

  • Imposed an unwarranted alert on CBSA that Eritrean Musicians come to Canada to assist fundraising terrorists; making it challenging and difficult for musical events and putting our prominent and famous Eritrean musicians targets of interrogation and suspicion

  • Requested the total ban of entry to famous Eritrean musicians in to Canada

  • and many more

Eritrean Canadians by now realized the dubious alliance of these like-minded defectors who abandoned their people in pursuit of their personal agendas. They spend every waking minute churning out accusations to denigrate Eritrean communities and organisations in Winnipeg.

Eritrea is going to make Russia turn against Ethiopia:  Awate.com


Awate.com, the Wahhabi-inspired website that wants to impose Sharia law and the Arabic language on Eritreans is at it again with their shenanigans. According to their recent Gedab News, which many Eritreans have come to jokingly refer to as "Geldam (idiot) News", Chinese diplomats are allegedly upset at President Isaias Afwerki (PIA) for attempting to 'ignite a superpower confrontation' in the region after the president stated Russia should play an active role in securing peace and security in the region. Awate wrote:

Gedab News learned that recently Chinese diplomats met the Eritrean president and protested against the Eritrean government’s attempts to ignite a superpower confrontation in its conflict with Ethiopia......That call for Russia’s involvement, and a call for the Cold War era confrontation didn’t please the Chinese who passed their disapproval to the Eritrean president. But the Eritrean president is still pursuing his strategy to involve the Russians in Eritrea’s regional conflicts.

In other words, Awate is implying PIA has the power to influence the Russian Federation to do his bidding in the Horn of Africa region, and that this is somehow upsetting the Chinese, who happen to enjoy excellent relations with the Russians.

Of course, the Chinese have no leverage with the Russians, so they must come to PIA to voice their concerns, right Awate?

As much as Eritreans like to see the so-called opposition turn PIA into something of a mythical legend or the Michael Jordan of the political world, he does not have magical powers to make countries do as he commands, let alone 'ignite a confrontation' with two superpowers who enjoy excellent relations with one another.

But then again, this is Awate.com. This is the same website that claimed PIA is dead only to find out days later he magically resurrected to state reports of his death were greatly exaggerated on ERI-TV. So it's possible they could genuinely believe PIA is some supernatural being that can not only come back from the dead, but also Bibbidi-bobbidi-boo his way to making nations do as he pleases.

On a serious note, Russia and Eritrea have improved their relations of late, and this is clearly upsetting Awate and their Ethiopian handlers. I'm sure even they know what they wrote is complete nonsense. They probably wrote it with the goal of trying to cause confusion and friction between both countries by hinting Russia's Horn of Africa policy goes through Asmara. Simply put, the article is a poor man's attempt at reverse psychology.

Thomas Jefferson, “We hold these truths to be self-evident: that all men are created equal; that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights; that among these are life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.” Unfortunately, today in Ethiopia no one has unalienable rights to live with liberty and pursuit of happiness. The citizens of Ethiopia have been denied their fundamental rights in which they were endowed by the Creator. Sadly, the TPLF’s regime has no utmost regard to its citizens and the Creator as well. On a daily bases in Ethiopia, a family is losing loved ones to the bloodthirsty regime. How much can Ethiopians continue to endure a horror of terror on their loved ones by the regime? And also, has Ethiopia reached a threshold stage of boiling points in which mammoth of civil unrests are on the horizon?

George Orwell, “Power Corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely.” The Tigray People Liberation Front (TPLF) was originated from Tigray. Tigray is bordered by Eritrea to the north, Sudan to the west, the Djibouti to the northeast, and the Ethiopia to south. The Tigray province has greatly suffered during the blood-thirsty Col.Mengistu Haile Mariam regime of Ethiopia from 1974-1991. According to history, “In 1975 the Tigray (Tigrayan) People’s Liberation Front began a protracted rebellion against the military government. This conflict aggravated a disastrous drought and famine between 1984 and 1985, which the government tried to ameliorate by forcibly relocating hundreds of thousands of peasants to well-watered regions in the south and west. An international outcry led to the suspension of this program, but by then it had led to the deaths of some 100,000 people, and hundreds of thousands more sought refuge from civil war and famine in The Sudan and Djibouti. Tigray forces liberated the region in 1989 and supported the overthrow of the Ethiopian national government in 1991. Their victory resulted in the replacement of an Amhara-dominated government with one led by Tigray leaders, a source of continuing conflict throughout the 1990s.”(1)

In 1989, the Tigrayan People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) merged with other ethnically based opposition movements to form the Ethiopian People’s Revolutionary Democratic Front (EPRDF). When the TPLF roamed into the capital of Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, to fill the vacuum power that the Col. Mengistu’s regime had left, the Ethiopians did not extended their cordial arm to welcome the minority Tigrayan liberators. The deceased Prime Minister Meles Zenawi was pressured to conduct national election if his regime were continuously to receive financial aid from Developed Countries. When the national election was held on May, 2005, the Ethiopians have spoken in staggering numbers of votes against the TPLF regime. Unfortunately, the regime was completely taken by surprise of the results’ votes that deceased-Prime Minister Meles Zenawi immediately retrieved to silent the oppositions by the barrel of guns.

The 2005 national election was clearly an indicator of how the Tigrayan liberators were not the representative institutions of the multi-fabrics of ethnicity of Ethiopia. Certainly, the Ethiopians, then and now, saw the Tigrayan liberators not as embodiment’s government or a savior but as an alien who has occupied their lands not with ballots of vote but with barrel of guns. Indeed, the TPLF regime for the beginning did not have slightly chance to assimilate into intertwined and heterogeneous fabrics of Ethiopia’s society because the belligerent liberators come from different culture and ethnicity region of Horn of Africa. The Tigrayan liberators would never win the hearts and minds of Ethiopians because they are perceived to be belligerent aliens with absolute power in the foreigner lands. Obviously, the Tigrayan people must come into realization of their ‘no win situations’ in Ethiopia. The alien liberators, even without absolute power, would always be unwelcome by all Ethiopians.

Watts Riot of 1965, “In the predominantly black Watts neighborhood of Los Angeles, racial tension reaches a breaking point after two white policemen scuffle with a black motorist suspected of drunken driving. A crowd of spectators gathered near the corner of Avalon Boulevard and 116th Street to watch the arrest and soon grew angry by what they believed to be yet another incident of racially motivated abuse by the police. A riot soon began, spurred on by residents of Watts who were embittered after years of economic and political isolation. The rioters eventually ranged over a 50-square-mile area of South Central Los Angeles, looting stores, torching buildings, and beating whites as snipers fired at police and firefighters. Finally, with the assistance of thousands of National Guardsmen, order was restored on August 16.”(2)

History is always repeating itself. In Ethiopia on daily bases, a micro-level of demonstrations across the country have been waged by the oppressed Ethiopians on the bloodthirsty TPLF regime. The micro-level of demonstrations on the streets of Addis Ababa or on remote villages are truly an indicator of unsuitable environments in which the citizens of Ethiopia are subjected to the daily of inequality and injustice by the regime. Sadly, the regime has used his ‘barrel of guns’ to crush and to silent the demonstrators across the country.

Malcom X, “Truth is on side of the oppressed.” The oppressed Ethiopian citizens are currently coping with abhorrent environments in which all their fundamental rights have been stripped away from their sacred constitutions by the bloodthirsty regime. Furthermore, the Ethiopian citizens are living in ‘state of fear’ that their loved ones could be randomly taken by the Agazi-Commando apparatus in the daylights or nights from anywhere. Also, the regime could label anyone with the terrorism’s blanket and could sentence or give a dead penalty to anyone. No one is immune from the horrors of regime even the small creatures of animal kingdom. However, in recent events of freedom-fighter British citizen Andargachew Tsige, who was extradited from Yemen while he was doing transient from International Airport of Sana, the world has finally seen the true-colors of the regime who have managed for several decades to silent and to butcher the Ethiopian citizens. Slowly but surely, the dazzling lights of truth is illuminating on the profound wounds and shatter-souls of Ethiopians who have endured horrors under the regime for several decades.

V for Vendetta, “People should not be afraid of their government, government should be afraid of their people.” Time is ticking for the oppressive regime in Ethiopia. Although for several decades, the oppressive regime has waged a horror not only on Ethiopians but also on Eritrea, and Somalia. Collectively, Ethiopians are standing up for their fundamental rights and liberty all over the country. The micro-level of demonstrations by the Ethiopians are certainly an indication of people are neither afraid or fear of their oppressive regime who has constantly used his military junta to butcher and to silence the civil-unrests throughout the country. Perhaps the sporadic civil unrests might be at micro-levels throughout the country but it is the precursor for the beneath surface of fabric society in which enormous volcanic civil unrests that it’s vigorously brewing at high velocity. God forbidden, if the enormous volcanic of civil unrests ruptured anytime in Ethiopia, the outcome is going to be catastrophic human-crisis not only in Ethiopia but also in the Horn of Africa. Since the cradle of humankind, no oppressive regime could continue to be oppressor… for infinitive. For example, the French Revolution, 1789 to 1799, was a huge civil unrests in France. Then, the people of France in 1789 have reached the threshold of boiling points that the people were neither afraid nor fear to demand for their liberty and unalienable rights from the oppressive government. The noble nations, such America and United Kingdom, must  vigorously attempt to rescue the Ethiopians and citizens of Horn of Africa from the oppressive TPLF regime who has brought endless of horrors on innocent lives and on the region of Horn of Africa. The Developed Countries must immediately cease all the financial aids going to the butcher regime of Ethiopia. The time has arrived upon Ethiopians that they are neither afraid or fear from the bloodthirsty regime anymore. The Ethiopians have finally awaken!

UNAIDS 2014: Eritrea’s Continued Progress in Combatting the HIV/AIDS Scourge

According to UNAIDS, Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) remains the region most heavily affected by the HIV/AIDS epidemic. Specifically, of the 35 million people living with HIV, 25 million are living in SSA, and the region accounted for 74% of all the people dying from AIDS-related causes in 2013.1 However, amidst these stark figures and though HIV/AIDS remains one of Africa’s most significant public health challenges,2 significant progress has been made. For example, prior to 2001, HIV/AIDS treatment in Africa was nearly nonexistent; yet, now some 86% of people living with HIV who know their status in SSA are receiving antiretroviral therapy (ART), and nearly 76% of them have achieved viral suppression.3

While many countries – both in SSA and around the world – have shown significant progress in combatting HIV/AIDS, Eritrea’s strong record battling HIV/AIDS stands out positively. Located in the fractious Horn of Africa, Eritrea is on pace to achieve the UN’s Millennium Development Goal related to combatting HIV/AIDS, malaria, and other diseases.4 Further, its HIV-related figures are distinguished as amongst the best, both within the region and comparatively across the continent (see Table 1 and Table 2).

Eritrea’s success in combatting HIV/AIDS is founded upon multisectoral approach that also involves the targeting of harmful societal behaviors and traditions. The country has: targeted traditional and patriarchal stereotypes and practices - banning child marriage5 and FGM/FGC6; focused on improving gender equality and decreasing the burden of poverty borne by women; and sought to reduce stigma and discrimination. Further, community awareness programs have been vigorous and effective in the social marketing of condoms, communicating safe practices, offering educational programs, and providing youth or peer counseling.

The country’s commitment to the health of citizens living with HIV/AIDS is also clearly illustrated by considering the national provision of antiretroviral therapy (ART). ART helps to avert HIV/AIDS related deaths, while being a critical factor in driving down the rate of new infections.7 Like its other HIV/AIDS-related figures, Eritrea’s ART coverage stands out positively in comparison with SSA or its regional neighbors (see Table 3).

Overall, considering its figures in the context of its various socio-economic, development, and regional challenges or in comparison to other countries throughout Africa, Eritrea’s success becomes particularly striking. Potentially serving as a model for Africa, Eritrea’s HIV/AIDS success also illustrates what can be achieved with a self-reliant approach, a capacity to adapt, effective coordination, and cost-effective projects.8

At the same time, the potentially devastating consequences posed by HIV/AIDS – in terms of severe human toll and national developmental disaster – mean that Eritrea has little room for complacency. Rather, the country must continue to augment its existing programmes and further promote effective initiatives and interventions in order to control and reduce the harmful impact of HIV/AIDS.
