New Ethio-Eritrea trade deal awaiting finial decision

By The Ethiopian Herald, | February 4, 2020

Ethio- Eritrea trade deal that was under preparation for many months has been finalized and it is awaiting both countries’ finial decision or approval, Ministry of Trade and Industry (MoTI) said.

Approached by The Ethiopian Herald MoTI Communication Affairs Director Wondimu Filate said that the ministry has sent a complete Ethio-Eritrea border trade legal framework to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MoFA) in a bid to strike a trade deal soon having secured approval from both countries.

The legal document stipulates trade agreement that relies on export items and transaction currency, he said. “When MoFA gives us green light, we will make the trade deal with our Eritrean counterpart. We have already expressed our interest and are waiting for their response.”

MoTI had conducted a study regarding the market interest or gap in Eritrea, the commodities and other products during the informal or elementary trading on the border while preparing the legal document by marketing experts, Wondimu mentioned.

The study focused on unilateral, bilateral and multilateral trading schemes in the market product interest between the two nations, he said. The cross border trade between Ethiopia and Eritrea will occur within a radius of 10 km from their shared borders.

It is a great opportunity to Ethiopians living in the border areas to trade with Eritreans as they have been carrying out various trades coming to the middle of the country wasting time and energy, he noted.

Therefore, MoTI has identified the preferable commodities and transaction currency of traders in the area. The currency will be in when the two nations reach trade agreement; they will choose Birr, Nakfa or USD as a transaction currency, according to Wondimu.

More or less the new Ethio- Eritrea trade agreement has similarity with the existing transaction of other neighboring countries, he stated. As to him, Ethiopians and Eritreans have been trading informally in the border areas and the formalizing of such trade will build a booming business between the two sisterly countries.

Scholars have been suggested that trade relation between the two countries should base on set principles. The two countries have made public that series of discussions are going on to come up with a mutually beneficial trade deal. AAU school of law Asst. Prof. Martha Belete once told The Ethiopian Herald that the deal ought to include area coverage, value cap, type of product and number of travels under the category of governing cross border trade of the pact. She also prefers the agreement shall have similarity to other border trade relations with neighboring nations.

The legal frame work that is sent to MoFA has incorporated the aforementioned suggestions, it was learnt.

The Importance of Operation Fenkil and the Battle of Massawa in Eritrea’s History

By Bereket Kidane

Later this week, Eritreans and their leaders will descend upon Massawa to commemorate the fierce battle waged to liberate the port city during the fight for independence.

The 30thanniversary of the Battle of Massawa, also called Operation Fenkil, is a time of pride, gratitude and hope. Pride that the Yikealo generation – the generation that fought and won Eritrea’s War of Independence – had the courage and determination to launch a daring land and sea attack to liberate the port city of Massawa,Pearl of the Red Sea. Gratitude that their self-sacrifice has made it possible for us to realize a long-held dream of an independent and sovereign State of Eritrea. Hope that at last, the Horn region is looking to a future free of conflict and one that is based on mutual trust and cooperation, thanks to the expulsion of the scheming TPLF from the levers of power.

Luckily, there are still many veteran tegadeltisof the Battle of Massawa left and are sharing details of that battle and what Operation Fenkil means to them. The youngest of the EPLF tegadeltis who participated in the 1990 Battle of Massawa are now in their fifties. So the Battle of Massawa has not yet gone from memory to legend because they are still around to tell us about it.

The 1988 Battle of Afabet had already marked a turning point in the EPLF’s favor in the fight for independence. The significance of Operation Fenkil is that it signaled the end of Ethiopia’s illegal occupation of Eritrea in the most vivid way. So vast was the endeavor, so far-reaching its consequences.

The ensuing aerial bombardment of civilians of the port city by the Ethiopian Airforce is still fresh in the minds of the public. The Dergue regime committed horrendous war crimes in the aftermath of the Battle of Massawa when it bombed civilians for seven straight days with the internationally banned cluster bombs.

Watching footage from the Battle of Massawa one can easily tell that the breadth and scope of Operation Fenkil were gargantuan. It was the largest tank battle fought on the African continent between two opposing armies. The sheer number of troops and tanks the EPLF assembled for the offensive were enormous. The logistical preparations it undertook were extraordinary.

Operation Fenkil was launched in the pre-dawn darkness on February 8, 1990. It was fought on multiple fronts. By the third day, it succeeded in completely routing the enemy out of its heavily-defended strongholds in the port city and the islands around it. The young EPLF Navy operating a flotilla of speed boats provided critical support and firepower by destroying and sinking ships anchored around Massawa Harbor.

Operation Fenkil is a veritable milestone in Eritrean history. It is rightly being memorialized for the great strategic victory it was and what it accomplished in paving way for a sovereign Eritrea.

Operation Fenkil was not only another turning point in the armed struggle for independence, it is also a major historic event in Eritrea’s history.

TPLF Declared No War No Peace Policy on Itself.

By Abel Kebedom

The 1998-2000 border war between Ethiopia and Eritrea inflicted heavy human and material loss on the two countries. Many writers have already described the war as nonsense and unnecessary. The reason behind such characterization is because border issues in Africa are often resolved through legal mechanisms. The Cameron-Nigeria and the Eritrea-Yemen legal border resolutions are a good example. After the war between Ethiopia and Eritrea ended, the two countries followed such a premise and signed the Alger’s agreement. The main theme of the Algiers agreement was to resolve the border conflict through the Eritrea Ethiopia border commission (EEBC) and agreed on the verdict of the court to be final and binding.

Once the verdict was given, the then Ethiopian Foreign Minister and member of the TPLF clique, Seyoum Mesfin, did not waste time to declare victory and asking the international community to put pressure on Eritrea to accept the ruling. However, when he learned that what he told the Ethiopian people was a lie, he turned 360 degrees and started to criticize the decision. In here it is important to raise one very important question. What was the agenda of Seyoum Mesfin and his TPLF clique when they signed the Alger’s agreement? Was it to resolve the border issue peacefully? The answer is no. It was because they could not sustain the war against Eritrea and saw the agreement as a way out and possibly to buy time to prepare for another war. That is why using all Ethiopian resources and diplomatic network, they decided to work hard to cripple Eritrea politically, socially and economically. As an extension of their gullible ambition, they even complained about the travel of a German Orchestra to Eritrea to participate in the Independence celebration. When they felt their rule in Ethiopia was threatened by internal powers, they intermittently attacked Eritrea. Coupled with Eritrea’s historical external enemies, they worked hard to sanction Eritrea, hoping that the military hardware of the country would depreciate through time with no possibility to replace it. In fact, the late prime minister of Ethiopia, Melese Zenawi, in his speech after the sanction was imposed, clearly stated that the Eritrean airplanes, tanks, and heavy artillery would be out of use soon because no country would dare to sell a replacement to Eritrea. The final game was to create a situation where TPLF would control Eritrea with a minimum cost and install a puppet government.

Although TPLF’s No war and No peace policy continued for 20 years, Eritrea not only resisted but also redoubled its effort to shorten the life of the TPLF minority rule in Ethiopia. Finally, TPLF was removed from power in 2018. The same year the new Ethiopian prime minister, Abiey Ahmed, declared his acceptance of the EEBC border verdict with no precondition, and for that reason, he was awarded a noble prize in December 2019. However, such an overture of peace between Ethiopia and Eritrea was not acceptable to TPLF. For TPLF the border issue is a card to play games, mainly a game that facilitates its declaration of Tigray independence. Although border issues are the responsibility of the Federal government, TPLF wants to directly negotiate with Eritrea. As a result, TPLF has declared a No War No peace policy on itself. From now on wards, it is highly unlikely that there will be a peaceful solution to the border problem between Ethiopia and Eritrea nor there will be a relation between Tigray and Eritrea if TPLF is in power in Tigray.

What is almost certain is through time TPLF will die and get buried in Tigray. The recent military show of force is simply a sign of desperation. What is TPLF going to do with a ragtag militia? Any prevacation against Eritrea or the Federal government will be a suicide because it will be dealt significantly. So, the only thing such ragtag army could do is, simply to guard Getachew Assefa and his cronies in Mekelle. As to Eritrea, there is no need to hurry to take any action on TPLF because through time TPLF will explode itself. When it comes to TPLF it is its worst enemy. It will not be long.

Conclusion,

The recent peace agreement between Ethiopia and Eritrea is a rare opportunity that could lead to a peaceful and sisterly relationship between the two countries. That is why Eritrea needs to continue to support it. TPLF might try to obstruct it, but it will not be successful. TPLF’s time has expired and it cannot resuscitate and take power in Ethiopia. Although the long term suffering of the people of Tigray will be unfortunate and unnecessary, it is better to leave TPLF’s fate to the judgment of time.

Awet Ne Hafash and Eternal Glory to Our Martyrs.

‘ተኣምር’ Heroism in the Face of the Great Challenge'

By Embassy Media

‘ተኣምር’ Heroism in the Face of the Great Challenge - #FENKIL2020 Fenkil has become a great success because of its pivotal contribution to the realization of the political objective of Eritreans. The greatness and decisiveness of the Fenkil operation lies in its impact on the speed with which independence was achieved, not simply the liberation of Massawa or destruction of the enemy. Through Fenkil Eritreans were able not only to defeat the enemy in battlefield but also end the political and diplomatic dominance of the Derg. The valour of the tank battalions of Fenkil, who choose to take physical risks, is an example of sacrifice. The Jaguar, Commander, and Tiger, now resting in Massawa, have a lot to tell. They were crushed by enemy artillery while crossing sigalet qetan. The commanders of these three tanks were willing to sacrifice their lives in the service of the Eritrean cause.

DP World to Upgrade, Maintain Eritrean Ports

By Samuel Gebre | Bloomberg

The Red Sea state of Eritrea contracted DP World Ltd. to upgrade its ports as regional peace brings increased business to its shores.

Formerly isolated Eritrea is normalizing foreign relations after signing an historic peace deal in July 2018 with neighboring Ethiopia, Africa’s second-most populous nation. The two countries fought a border war two decades ago that claimed as many as 100,000 lives.

“DP World has facilitated the replacement of important equipment which was required and requested by the Eritrean port authorities to maintain operations and meet increase in demand for port services,” the harbor operator said in response to emailed questions.

The Dubai-based company has been monitoring “opportunities in the Horn of Africa,” it said. In 2018, its stake in a port in Djibouti, Ethiopia’s main trade route, was nationalized by the government.

Eritrean Information Minister Yemane Gebremeskel didn’t respond to an emailed request for comment sent a week ago.

TPLF leaders warn Eritrean president, solicit support from Eritrean People

TPLF leaders warn Eritrean president, solicit support from Eritrean PeopleTigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) seized the 45-anniversary celebration as an opportunity to showcase the extent of militarization.

By Borkena

In over a week-long series of events leading to Yekatit 11 (February 19), the day ethnic Tigray Nationalist political organization launched the armed struggle in the wilderness of Dedebit against the military government of Colonel Mengistu Hailemariam, military parades have been the centerpiece of the anniversary celebration. Some ethnic Tigray opposition figures were warning that TPLF could start war.

The organization has issued a statement on the occasion. Its heading reads “TPLF Official Statement on the Occasion of the 45th Anniversary of the Launching of the Armed Struggle of the People of Tigrai, 11 Lekatit 2012 Ge’ez C.(February 19, 2020).” Noticeably, Ethiopian calendar is used but it is described as “Ge’ez C”-the way it is referred to as in Eritrea.

The statement made a reference to the 17 years of armed struggle without any support from elsewhere:“”The people of Tigray endured the tough and costly journey with extreme forms of commitment and without asking for any external support, alternate partner, or pause.” Often, TPLF used to say that “all Ethiopians struggled to overthrow Fascist Derge regime.”

Then it goes to condemn what it called “parasitic decadence that occurred within the EPRDF in the last 3 to 4 years” – a reference to the reform measures after TPLF lost power following a pervasive and sustained protest in the country. And the narration was to the “Esteemed People of Tigrai” and “Esteemed Members of the TPLF”

It also painted an image of the imminent disintegration of Ethiopia due to policy measures of the political force that is currently holding power. “In the last couple of years, the country has suffered from heinous violations of law and unfolding crisis, and now it is on the verge of disintegration,” it said.

Under Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, says TPLF, “the country has become a playing field for all sorts of external actors.”

After soliciting support from a different section of the population apart from TPLF members and people of Tigray, the statement lastly pleaded to the people of Eritrea. “The people of Tigrai and TPLF have never wavered or compromised on the quest of the Eritrean people for freedom. As a result of the sacrifices we jointly made, we won over the brutal Dergi regime and achieved victory… Nonetheless, in the last 20 years we had been locked in an unnecessary conflict and we both paid dearly as a result. We all realize the scar this has left.”

And what TPLF wants is for the people of Eritrea to “revitalize mutual benefit…, and advance towards an era of mutual development.”The message for the Eritrean president is different. And it is not in the statement. In an event organized as part of the anniversary, leading TPLF leaders like Seyoum Mesfin, who has served as foreign minister for a long time, complained that the Eritrean president is interfering in the internal affairs of Ethiopia.

Tsegaye Berhe, another prominent TPLF leader, said t “If Isaias interferes in Ethiopian internal affairs, his hands will break, but he will bring about nothing,” as reported by BBC Amharic on Monday.

In an interview with Eritrea’s national TV, president Isaias indicated in the situation in Badme is worse after the peace agreement with Ethiopia, and that is because of TPLF leaders who are not willing to cede it to Eritrea.

The President’s interview

By Yafet Zereou

The interview conducted by President Isaias Afewerki on Friday 7th February 2020 seems to have ruffled a few feathers, judging by the reaction of some. I am reminded of the saying—if you throw a stone into a pack of dogs, the one that yelps is the one that got hit.

I can understand the TPLF getting all flustered by the interview and trying its utmost to cover the message of the interview by launching personal attacks on the President, after all the interview made it quite clear that the TPLF has no positive role to play in the region’s politics.

But, what did the President say? The President gave a summary of the last year and half since the signing of the historical peace agreement with the Ethiopian government led by Dr. Abiy Ahmed.

In his summary he pointed out that under the prevailing circumstances, Dr. Abiy’s decision to seek peace with Eritrea was a challenging one, requiring great courage on the part of the new Ethiopian leader.

President Isaias outlined that Eritrea did not approach the matter with unrealistic expectations but was nonetheless willing to give peace a chance, now that an Ethiopian leader with a genuine desire to seek peace had come.

The signing of the peace deal and the official cessation of hostilities between Eritrea and Ethiopia on 9th July 2018 was just the beginning of the journey on a very long and difficult road, elaborated the President.

It is because there was a glimmer of hope for peace, that Eritrea, chose to set aside—for the time being— the issue of Badme. An issue that will no doubt be resolved in due time.

The decision on the part of Eritrea to engage with Dr. Abiy of Ethiopia, showed the desire for peace of the Eritrean leadership and its farsightedness in agreeing to focus on major issues rather be bogged down.

The Eritrean leadership together with its new partners in the Ethiopian government, managed to successfully avoid the trap set by the TPLF, neutralising its poison.

When the President stated that the TPLF was hindering the return of Badme, some —like the BBC— misconstrued his statement to mean that the TPLF was still a power to reckon with. However, the reality on the ground could not be different. The way the TPLF is blocking the return of Badme, is by using civilians as human shields. It is to be remembered that it was civilians that blocked the Ethiopian army convoy, not armed TPLF forces. Had armed TPLF forces tried to block the Ethiopian army, they would simply have been swept aside, but the TPLF—not for the first time— tried to get the Ethiopian army to open fire on Tigrayan civilians. In the late 80s, it successfully got the Ethiopian army to commit a massacre in the village of Hawzen, but unfortunately for the TPLF,— but fortunately for the innocent civilians— the Ethiopian army had learnt form its past experience.

The President’s lofty idea of bringing about a peaceful and prosperous region, was lost in the noisy chatter of the TPLF and its paid mercenaries. Any thinking person would have understood the underlining message of the interview and any person who has the goodwill of the people of the Horn of Africa and beyond, would have agreed with the message.

When I see elements in the media trying to trash the interview, without giving a reason as to why they disagree and which points of the interview they found disagreeable, I am reminded of the saying—do not put your pearls before swine, lest they trample it.

When Dr. Abiy came to power, he tried his utmost to accommodate the TPLF, but they were unable to change their ways, choosing to undermine him and the work he was doing to bring about a lasting peace in the region.

In his interview, the President made it quite clear that there was no point trying to compromise with the TPLF. The TPLF as an organisation cannot work for a peaceful neighbour hood, it is an organisation that needs strife and conflict to survive. It cannot afford to let go of Badme and for peace to prevail between Eritrea and Ethiopia because it would be the first victim of the peace as its people hold it accountable for the lost years and lives.

The reason that the TPLF is trying its utmost to derail the peace between Eritrea and Ethiopia, is because once peace prevails the focus will be on its own failures. Ethiopians will be asking why nearly 200 thousand of their country men lost their lives on land that is not theirs. Even it tried to wriggle out of being responsible for the 1998-2000 border war, it cannot absolve itself for the failure to implement the final and binding Border commission of 2002. The manner and ease at which Dr. Abiy managed to accept the Algiers Agreement without any preconditions, has shown the entire World that the biggest obstacle to peace was the TPLF. It is in appreciation of this, that the World Community presented Dr. Abiy with the highest accolade it could.

The President rightfully pointed out that politics based on ethnicity is a recipe for disaster, reminiscent of the Tower of Babel. Politics is about ideology, ideas and concepts which change in the course of time. No doubt that there must be equality between all people regardless of ethnicity, gender, age etc. However, trying to group an entire people into one political party based on their ethnicity is simply wrong. Take for example an Oromo peasant farmer. The farmer will no doubt share culture and language with an Oromo business man, but in terms of policies about his livelihood and the challenges he faces, he would probably have more in common with a another peasant farmer from another ethnic group. For example, if the business man was into buying agricultural products, it is obvious that he would want to do so at the lowest price possible, whereas the farmer will naturally want to sell at the highest price. The two may share the same linguistic language, but they will certainly not be speaking the same language when it comes to business. The business man will have the same concern as other businessmen regardless of their ethnicity and the worker the same, the farmer the same. Therefore, politics should transcend ethnicity and be based on common need and aims.

Some had seen the offer of the President to help Ethiopia during this difficult transition period as a desire on his part to interfere in the internal politics of Ethiopia, despite saying that Eritrea’s concern did not give it licence to intervene.

His offer for help should have been seen as a key step in ensuring peace and stability in the region. Take for example the Ethiopian army stationed on the border with the two countries, which is cut off from the rest of the country by the TPLF.. Had Eritrea been hostile to the government of Dr. Abiy, this army would have been at the mercy of the TPLF. With the TPLF at loggerheads with Dr. Abiy’s government, it might have tried to block supply lines to the Ethiopian army on the border to cause unrest, or force it to go on a rampage to cause death amongst the civilian population. As mentioned above this has been done before and its not beyond the realms of probability. At the moment, this scenario is not possible because, if push comes to shove, the Ethiopian army can be supplied by either the Eritrean government or the Ethiopian government via Eritrea. This is just a simple example of Eritrea offering help and I would be hard pressed to find a person who would think that providing water and food to the Ethiopian army, as ‘interfering in the internal politics’ of Ethiopia.

In conclusion, the President’s interview of 7th February 2020, clearly shows that he is a man with a vision to bring about peace and prosperity , not only to Eritrea but the entire region. As they say, the camel marches on, while the dogs bark.

TPLF Chair Announces Intentions to Declare Independence if Campaign Against Tigray Persists

By Ezega

The Chairman of the Tigray People's Liberation Front (TPLF) Debretsion Geberemichael has expressed intentions of the Tigray regional state to become an independent nation if hate speeches against its people persist.

In a speech he delivered in connection with the 45th anniversary of the TPLF foundation, Debretsion said: “You have to announce the Tigray region as an independent nation if foreign forces continue meddling in the affairs of Ethiopia and hatred against the Tigray region is not rectified." Debretsion said this to Members of the Federal Parliament of the Tigray region who were attending the 45th anniversary of the TPLF.

The chairperson was speaking before tens of thousands of people in Mekelle stadium where no officials from the federal government showed up.

“Your term as MPs of the federal parliament is nearing an end; hence do something that would be referred to as history before your term expires,” he said

Debretsion was, in particular, referring to the recent speech by Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed who said “We, the Oromo people, have crippled Weyanes; the TPLF members are at present confined in one place." The much-criticized speech by the Prime Minister was delivered during the inaugural ceremony of an irrigation project in Bale Goba last week.

“We have to condemn foreign interference in internal affairs of Ethiopia and hate speeches being delivered by leaders of the country against the people of Tigray,” said Deberetsion Gebremichael, who is also deputy president of the Tigray region.

“Discharge your responsibilities, otherwise you will be blamed for playing a negative role for a crumbled Ethiopia," Debertsion warned the MPs. He did not elaborate on why he felt such a step will enable the TPLF to avoid responsibility after nearly three decades of rule over Ethiopia, which many people blame for the ethnic division in Ethiopia today.

Currently, there is relative peace in many parts of Ethiopia except in Oromia region of western Ethiopia as support rallies for Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed and the ruling Prosperity Party are held in different parts of the country. There are several regional organizations planning to contest that region in the upcoming elections, including the Oromo Liberation Front (OLF), and the Oromo Federalist Congress (OFC).

Debretsion also spoke about the historical relationship between the Tigray region and neighboring Eritrea and recalled that the people of the two were buried together while fighting the Derg regime.

In his message to the people of Eritrea, Debertsion said TPLF had a firm stand on the right to freedom of the Eritrean people despite accusations and opposition from different political forces.

The TPLF Chair blamed some political forces for conspiring war between the peoples of Eritrea and Tigray even though he did not mention the political forces by name.

Debretsion also accused Addis Ababa and Asmara of shutting refugee centers and denying access for new Eritrean migrants in Ethiopia.

The deputy president recalled the cultural, language and common history between the peoples of Tigray and Eritrea, who he said will by no means enter into a conflict.

TPLF: The Play of the Liar-in-chief, Convicted Criminal, and Tribal Hack.

By Abel Kebedom

It has been no secret that the TPLF crime family, that is hiding in hotels in Mekelle and Aksum, was working hard to obstruct the change and new beginning in Ethiopia. It was hoping that the turmoil in Ethiopia might be exacerbated, ultimately creating a favorable condition for TPLF to assume power in Arat Killo, directly or indirectly or declare the independence of the Tigray republic. However, the recent glimpse of hope and stability in Ethiopia, coupled with the recent interview by the president of Eritrea, might have dampened that hope and put the final coffin nail on TPLF’s dream to come to power or pull the second playing card of declaring Tigray independence. That is why recently we heard a loud cry for help from the crime family’s disgruntled former officials, Siyoum Mesfin (Liar-in-chief), Siye Abraha (Convicted Criminal) and Tsegai Berhe (Tribal Hack).

The Liar-in-Chief.

Siyoum Mesfin is a former Foreign Minister of the Tigray tribal clique who is more known by his bald- faced lies. When the Ethio-Eritrea Border Commission (EEBC) gave its verdict, he did not waste time to appear Infront of the TV camera to spread his cheap lies. In his official briefing to the media, he said the EEBC gave every inch of territory the clique claimed from Eritrea, including the town of Badme. Believing his bold face lie was true, many Tigrayans rejoiced the EEBC decision and danced in the street of Addis Ababa and Mekelle, later to realize that they were duped by their so-called foreign minister nicknamed “Comic Ali”. He is also known for his bald-faced lies during the TPLF initiated border war against Eritrea that earned him the nickname “Comic Ali”. As a prelude to his tribal clique’s start of the war of aggression against Eritrea, he blatantly lied that Eritrea broke the US-brokered and monitored Air attack mortarium by conducting an air attack on the town of Adigrat. Sium Mesfin is a yes man who amassed a massive ill-gotten wealth during his tenure as Foreign Minister and Ambassador to China that is currently managed by his close and distant relatives. Please use the link below to watch the real-time video and learn about the lies of this loser and disgruntled former TPLF official.

The Convicted Criminal.

Siye Abrha is a professional conspirer who once served as a Defense Minister of the Tigray tribal clique in Ethiopia. In his bid to unseat the former prime minister of Ethiopia, late Meles Zenawi, from power and become the prime minister of the then minority regime in Ethiopia, he was a familiar face in Asmara. When he knew he was not going to get the support he expected from Eritrea, he ordered the execution-style killing of twelve Eritrean military officials who were in a meeting in the town of Badme, in effort to quell the harassment and expulsion of native Eritreans from the area and surrounding villages. Siey’s action effectively triggered the conflict between TPLF and Eritrea. Later, the border war rekindled Siye’s bid to unseat Meles from power and worked hard to turn the army against the late prime minister. He was outsmarted by Meles, convicted of corruption and thrown to jail for many years. After his recent stint in Washington, he is back in Mekelle at his old game hoping that an opportunity might arise for him to realize his old dream. As a testament to his commitment to the mafia group, he recently received recognition and certificate of award from the TPLF crime family.

The Tribal Hack.

Tsegay Berhe is a relatively unknown low profile guy whose power comes from his marriage lineage to the Adwa crime family. He has once served as a security adviser to the former Prime Minister, Hailermariam Desalegne, effectively controlling the TPLF security apparatus in Ethiopia. He is known to have a fantasy with criminal acts and gets pleasure from supervising torture against innocent civilians and former TPLF security officials who were suspected of not following TPLF’s orders, including the former top TPLF security official Woldeselassie Woldemichael. During his tenure as a security adviser, he has ordered the killing of thousands of innocent Oromo and Amhara youth in parts of Addis Ababa, Oromia and Amhara regions. To evade accountability for his crimes, currently, he is a zombie in the streets of Mekelle and Aksum agitating Tigray youth for war against the Ethiopian federal government and Neighboring Eritrea.

Conclusion

The recent interview of the Eritrean president on regional issues highlighted the destructive role of TPLF in the Eritrea-Ethiopia Peace process and the prevailing change in Ethiopia. He specifically mentioned the TPLF initiated new settlements on the land that was awarded to Eritrea by the EEBC, currently under the TPLF crime family. He noted TPLF’s action is a desperate move to obstruct the peace process between the two sisterly countries, nevertheless, he emphasized the importance of peaceful co-existence between the people of Eritrea and Ethiopia. As a sign of concern to Ethiopia’s stability, he pointed out the negative role of TPLF engineered ethnic politics in Ethiopia, legitimized by the TPLF authored constitution, and provided suggestions on how to address it. The president’s interview showed Eritrea’s commitment to peace in the region and its readiness to face any challenges that may arise in the future. The TPLF criminal family, that can only profit from ethnic conflict and mayhem, did not like the interview. Therefore, the recent play of the liar-in-chief, a convicted criminal and tribal hack on Tigray TV was nothing more than a sign of hopelessness and desperate cry for attention. Guys, the game is over.

Eternal glory to our Martyrs,
Awet ne Hafash.

US urges Ethiopia to sign Nile dam deal

By Mary Harper | BBC

The United States says Ethiopia must, in the shortest possible time, sign a deal with Egypt and Sudan about a giant dam it is building on the River Nile.

Steven Mnuchin, the US treasury secretary, said the final testing and filling of the dam should not take place without an agreement.

Ethiopians have reacted angrily on social media, calling on Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed to resist US pressure.

Earlier this week Ethiopia failed to attend what was meant to be the final signing of an accord. Egypt and Sudan fear the $4bn (£3bn) dam will deprive their populations of water.

The Grand Renaissance Dam is at the heart of Ethiopia's manufacturing and industrial dreams. When completed it is expected to be able to generate a massive 6,000 megawatts of electricity.

Sudan fires scores of diplomats allegedly linked to Bashir

By Halligan Agade | CGTN

Sudan has fired scores of diplomats for alleged links to the administration of toppled President Omar al-Bashir, a legal committee said on Saturday.

The Empowerment Removal Committee was formed under a law introduced in November to dismantle the system built by Bashir, who was ousted in April last year after nearly three decades in power.

“One-hundred-and-nine ambassadors, diplomats and administrators were fired from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and those were appointed through political and social empowerment,” Mohamed al-Faki, deputy head of the committee, told a news conference in the capital, Khartoum.

Some of the diplomats were appointed by Bashir himself and the others were picked through his now dissolved National Congress Party, said Taha Othman, a member of the committee.
Earlier this month, the committee dissolved the boards of the country’s central bank and 11 other state-owned banks and fired the managers of eight of the banks.

It also seized the assets of the former ruling party last month.

Danakali completed first phase of Eritrea potash project

By Cecilia Jamasmie | Mining

Australia’s Danakali has finished the first phase of development of its world-class Colluli potash project in Eritrea, Africa, which takes the company a step closer to the construction phase and then onto production in 2022.

The Perth-based miner is now moving to Phase 2, which includes finalizing geotechnical work, buying critical equipment such as a reverse osmosis plant and looking into optimization opportunities.

Colluli, a 50:50 joint venture between Danakali and the Eritrean National Mining Corporation (ENAMCO), has been called “a game changer” for Eritrea’s economy, as is expected to become one of the world’s most significant and lowest-cost sources of sulphate of potash (SOP), a premium grade fertilizer.

“The government will benefit from the longer-term development of the project, and the expected significant boost to royalties, taxation and exports, and from jobs and skills and economic development of the region,” chief executive Niels Wage told MINING.COM last year.

The development of the Colluli potash projects coincides with the move towards diplomatic relations between the once feuding countries of Eritrea and Ethiopia, which officially declared peace in July 2018.

Welcome boost

A United Nations report published last year suggested that Colluli could significantly boost the economy of Eritrea, a country that, until 2018, was on the UN’s sanctions list.

The document estimated that Colluli would contribute 3% of the country’s GDP by 2021 and 50% of the nation’s exports by 2030, while providing 10,000 direct and indirect local jobs.

The report also identified how the mine could help Eritrea advance its sustainable development agenda, which are 13 priority Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). These include: No poverty, zero hunger, quality education, gender equality, clean water and sanitation, sustainable economic growth and decent work, industry, innovation and infrastructure, reduced inequalities, climate action, peace, justice and strong institutions and partnerships for the SDGs.

In the initial phase of operation, Wage said, Colluli would produce more than 472,000 tonnes a year of Sulphate of Potash. Annual output could rise to almost 944,000 tonnes if Danakali decides to go ahead with a second phase of development, as the project has a possible 200-year plus mine-life.

The asset has the potential to produce other fertilizer products, such as Sulphate of Potash Magnesium (SOP-M), muriate of potash (MOP) and gypsum, along with rock salt. There is also potential for kieserite and mag chloride to be commercialized with minimal further processing required.

The celebrations in London portray the great admiration and respect all Eritreans have for their gallant mothers and sisters.

The celebrations began with a moment of silence in remembrance of those who gave their lives for Eritrea's freedom. Following that, Mrs. Awet Ghebrelul, Chair person of NUEW- London Branch welcomed everyone and presented the official statement on the occasion.

Editor of African Women Empowerment, Ms. Evelyn Okpanachi, congratulated the Eritrean women for all the hard works and outlined the many achievements made and challenges faced by the Eritrean women in the struggle to build a new nation based on equality and progress.

Speaking at the celebration in which invited guests and hundreds of citizens took part, Mr. Tedros Goitom, Head of Public & Community Affairs of the Embassy of the State of Eritrea to UK & Ireland, highlighted the unparalleled contribution and heroism manifested by the Eritrean women in achieving the independence of the country, national development and safeguarding the nation's sovereignty. He also congratulated the NUEW for its decisive role in building a new Eritrea leading based on gender equality.

Mr. Tedros Goitom, further explained the special importance of this year's International Women's Day as it is being held at a time when Eritrean nationals inside the country and abroad have demonstrated their unity, resolve and determination, taking concerted action through strengthening their organisational basis and capacity in a bid to render the hostilities against Eritrea a further blow.

Also at the celebrations held in Birmingham, members of the NUEW branch asserted that the day plays significant role in assessing the achievements and the challenges of the struggle waged by women to ensure their rights and roles in the Eritrean society.

On the occasion veteran founders of the NUEWs used this celebration to pass on the torch to Eritrea's new generation of women as a symbol of the need to transfer the basic values as cultural heritage. Poetry, with music by Eritrean artists entertained the guests all night.

Eritrea condemns assassination attempt on Sudanese PM

By Shabait

Asmara, 10 March 2020- Eritrea has condemned, in the strongest terms, the cowardly assassination attempt on Sudanese Prime Minister Abdullah Hamdock.

In his message to General Abdel-Fattah Al Burhan, President Isaias Afwerki stated: "this despicable act underscores, once again, the desperate measures that the forces of darkness and their sponsors are prepared to take to scuttle and reverse the ongoing positive changes in the Sudan"

President Isaias further underlined: "The Government of Eritrea reiterates its full solidarity with the Government of Sudan in its vigorous undertakings to overhaul vestiges of the old regime to advance the welfare of the people of Sudan with its positive dividends to peace and stability in the region"

Amid Red Sea Rivalries, Eritrea Plays for Independence

By Harry Verhoeven | USIP

When Eritrea’s president last month hosted the leaders of Ethiopia and Somalia to discuss “regional cooperation,” that initiative drew few global headlines. Still, Eritrea’s move should be noted by policymakers and others working for stability in the Horn of Africa and the Red Sea region. For years, President Isaias Afwerki’s disdain for multilateral forums such as the African Union, and his strained relations with many governments in the region, have contributed to caricatures of Eritrea as the “North Korea of Africa.” But his invitation for two neighbors to discuss a new regional bloc reflects an important factor in Eritrea’s foreign policy: its efforts to preserve its independence in a fast-evolving geopolitical environment.

Eritrea evolved a reputation as perhaps Africa’s most isolated state. Hasn’t it historically been hostile to regional integration?

Yes and no. Eritrea’s relationship with the idea of regional cooperation has been complex ever since the country gained its independence from Ethiopia in 1993 following a 30-year war. That same year, Eritrean President Isaias Afewerki stunned his African peers when, at a summit of the Organization of African Unity (now the African Union), he publicly repeated criticisms he had formulated as one of Africa’s most formidable guerrilla commanders: the OAU had utterly failed by closing its eyes to the terror inflicted by Ethiopia’s Soviet-backed military dictatorship (the Derg) and he accused his peers of clinging to power while failing to take any meaningful action to address poverty in Africa. From that starting point, Eritrea never invested significant resources in continent-wide diplomacy. When the African Union (AU) imposed sanctions on Eritrea in 2009 for supporting al-Shabab extremists in Somalia and seeking to overthrow the Somali government, Eritrea suspended its participation in the organization and denounced the AU as a lapdog of U.S. imperialism and a mechanism for the hegemonic aspirations of Ethiopia, its main rival. In addition, Eritrea has twice withdrawn from the East African regional bloc—the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD).

Still, Eritrea is not by definition opposed to regional cooperation. In the 1990s, Isaias and his fighters formed the vanguard of the wave of leftist African liberation movements that captured power from the Red Sea to the Cape between 1991 and 1997. Together with “comrade-leaders” in Congo, Ethiopia, Rwanda and Uganda, Isaias dreamed of a “Greater Horn of Africa” of like-minded regimes who could offer an alternative to the much-criticized OAU and jointly develop regional investment opportunities to cement ideological solidarity. The government in Asmara sent Eritrean troops, spies and diplomats to support wars against the military-Islamist regime in Sudan and the dictatorship of Mobutu Seso Seko in the Democratic Republic of Congo (then Zaire). These were concrete sacrifices in blood and treasure made by a fragile, small and newly independent Eritrea to further its preferred form of regional integration.

What might Isaias hope to achieve with this new initiative?

Isaias’ proposal to deepen integration between Eritrea, Ethiopia and Somalia (the so-called "Cushitic Alliance") is a continuation of efforts he championed in the 1990s to institutionally anchor alliances between governments with a similar political outlook. Just like in the era of the “Greater Horn,” Asmara appears to be proposing new regional norms and understandings of peace and security as well as infrastructure ties to forge a web of partnerships among the participating states.

This said, the disappointments of the past have not been forgotten—most particularly not since the 1998-2000 “war of brothers” with Ethiopia, which ended the dream of the “Greater Horn.” Eritrean diplomacy, especially since that conflict, has been focused on creating space to maneuver and chart a foreign policy independent of Ethiopian hegemony. For almost 20 years, Isaias sought to undermine the Ethiopian government by supporting its domestic opposition as well as its adversaries in Somalia—policies that contributed to the imposition of international sanctions. Eritrea also aligned itself with Ethiopia’s rival, Egypt, and by establishing partnerships with Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates in which Isaias offered security cooperation—notably the use of Eritrea’s Red Sea port of Assab for operations in the Yemen war—in exchange for economic support against Ethiopian pressures. While this diplomatic choreography failed to stop Ethiopia’s regional ascendancy, it achieved the chief objective of keeping Isaias’ government in power.

Last month’s summit signals a change in the pattern of Isaias’ maneuvering, caused by recent geopolitical shifts. The Gulf states’ projection of power in the Horn of Africa and the European refugee crisis have provided Isaias with diplomatic and financial leverage to move from isolation to regional influence. In addition, the ascension of Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed side-lined Isaias’ Ethiopian nemesis, the Tigrayan People’s Liberation Front. That made it possible for Isaias to cooperate with Abiy in quickly negotiating an end to their countries’ “frozen” war. While that peace accord was a domestic popular triumph for both leaders, the rapprochement has stalled and the hoped-for “peace dividends”—economic and democratic—have been disappointing. The rise of the younger Abiy in Addis Ababa has allowed Isaias to pose as the region’s elder statesman and—in last month’s summit conference—to proffer his own idea for cooperation in the Horn of Africa; Isaias’ proposal will in fact undercut Ethiopia’s historic ambitions to once again dominate efforts toward greater regional integration.

Other players are moving to establish regional organizations in the Red Sea area, as Saudi Arabia just did in January. What are the implications of the Eritrean initiative in light of those efforts?

Recent efforts to establish new regional bodies, such as the Council of the Arab and African States of the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden, or to reinvigorate IGAD or the AU in the Horn of Africa, are ambivalent developments from Eritrea’s perspective. Its priority remains the preservation of its flexibility to shift policies and alignments as necessary to defend its independence, squeezed as it is among larger neighbors. Sudan, Ethiopia and Saudi Arabia have all had their own designs for the region, which have rarely accounted for Eritrean interests. As seen from Asmara, multilateral organizations under the control of actors with hegemonic ambitions are therefore potentially dangerous and better subverted or, if need be, boycotted altogether.

Eritrea joined the Red Sea Council at Riyadh’s unrelenting insistence but likely has no intention of letting the body circumscribe its sovereignty. Membership served the useful purpose of confirming the Saudi-Eritrea relationship and of reminding Ethiopia (which, at the insistence of Egypt, was not invited to join the council) that, despite the outward expressions of fraternity between Abiy and Isaias, Eritrea has strategic options that do not require Ethiopia’s consent.

Similarly, Isaias’ move toward a new grouping with Ethiopia and Somalia is useful to remind old foes in the Horn of Africa (Djibouti and Sudan) and the Gulf states that Eritrea has alternative friends and will not accept a role as regional proxy for Saudi Arabia or the United Arab Emirates. The growing projection of the Gulf states’ power in the Horn helped Isaias to break out of his isolation. But from the Eritrean perspective, that projection is a trend that requires careful management, rather than further encouragement, and that needs to be assessed in terms of its implications for Eritrea’s autonomy going forward.

Coronavirus-free Eritrea bans all internal, external travel

By Abdur Rahman Alfa Shaban | AfricaNews

Eritrea’s Ministry of Health also issued additional guidelines to all nationals & expatriates residing in the country. They have not recorded any case yet even though neighbours Sudan and Ethiopia have one and five cases respectively. Somalia also just confirmed their first case. Egypt on the other hand has been the most impacted African country with figures hitting above 100.

The guidelines basically bans all travels within and outside of the country.

1. Every person should refrain from internal & foreign travel unless this is for extremely urgent & unavoidable purposes;
2. Every person must avoid, in as much as this is possible, public gatherings;
3. Foreign travel from & to Eritrea has diminished significantly on the basis of the MoH guidelines issued last week. This will be bolstered further henceforth to fully restrict travel from, and to, Eritrea except in urgent & unavoidable circumstances

March 12, 2020: Eritrea’s coronavirus rules: Chinese, Italians, Iranians to be quarantined
Eritrea’s Health Ministry has issued guidelines relative to the recent coronavirus outbreak. The March 11 statement addresses local and international audiences in the areas of education and of entry into the Horn of Africa.

The statement says persons originating from or with recent travel history to four virus-impacted countries will be quarantined. The countries are China, Italy, South Korea and Iran.

Even though the government through the ministry has announced a quarantine, according to the Africa Disease Control Center based in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, Eritrea was among a handful African countries that do not have the capacity to test for the virus.

Eritrea is not the only country resorting to quarantining persons from or connected to particular countries. The Democratic Republic of Congo, DRC; announced similar measure for Germans, Italians, French and Chinese. Uganda has also announced quarantine for persons from 16 high-risk nations.

The Ministry confirmed that there was no case recorded in the country so far adding that since the country was “linked by land, air, and sea with several countries affected by the disease…. (it was) urgent and imperative for Eritrea to take precautionary measures to prevent the outbreak and spread of the disease as well as to prepare for all possible scenarios.

The closest neighbour of Eritrea to have recorded a case is Egypt, the first African country to record a case and a death. It currently has Africa’s highest infection rate with over 50 confirmed cases.

In view of these facts, the Ministry of Health issues the following guidelines:

1. Continuous sensitization campaigns will be disseminated through the various local media outlets in order to provide timely and full information to the general public. These announcements must be followed with due diligence.

2. In view of the potential gravity of the situation and for the sake of their own safety as well as the safety of the Eritrean people, the Ministry of Health urges all nationals and foreigners who may have plans to travel to, and from Eritrea, to postpone their plans on their own volition.

3. The Ministry of Health will continue to monitor developments earnestly to assess occurrence, rate and extent of contagion, and other vital parameters and symptoms of the epidemic. It will accordingly issue appropriate announcements and guidelines.

4. Visitors who originate directly from, or who have transited through, China, Italy, South Korea and Iran will be quarantined.

Response to The Arab Weekly FAKENEWS

Response to The Arab Weekly FAKENEWS The motive behind the article ‘As it moves closer to Eritrea, Egypt eyes military base on Nora island’ that appeared on the London based Arab Weekly on 15th March 2020 might be unclear: but there can be no doubt about the sub-standard ‘analysis’ and glaring inaccuracies exhibited in the article.

The article written by a certain Sabahat Khan, who is presented as some sort of analyst—a senior one at that—makes no effort to present the sources for the ludicrous clams made in the piece. Instead, the article chooses to cite ‘unconfirmed reports’, in a vain attempt to dress its patently false claims with a veneer of acceptability.

The author, supposedly a ‘senior analyst’ at the Institute for Near East and Gulf Military Analysis, demonstrated an inordinate level of ignorance of the region, by their unawareness of the historic peace deal between Eritrea and Ethiopia which was signed on 9th July 2018. Had the author been as knowledgeable as they claim to be about the region, they would have been aware of the peace deal and if they had taken the time to read the five points outlined in the agreement, they would have been made aware of the first point which states, ‘1. The state of war between Ethiopia and Eritrea has come to an end. A new era of peace and friendship has been opened.’ Thus, would have been spared from the indignity of exposing their utter ignorance about Eritrea, as shown by the claim ‘Ethiopia and Eritrea technically remain at war...’ made in the article.

The author is not just ignorant of the historic peace deals signed in Asmara, and Jeddah, but is blatantly oblivious of the geographical layout of Eritrea. Had the author had a modicum of knowledge about Eritrea and its geography, they would have known that there is no such thing as the ‘Dakhla Peninsula ‘.

The Dahlak (note, not Dakhla) is a group of islands that form an archipelago off the northeastern coast of Eritrea. By definition, a peninsula (Latin: paeninsula from paene "almost" and insula "island") is a piece of land that is bordered by water on three sides but connected to a mainland. This being the case, in a reflection of the incompetence of the author, the article claims that Nora is an island on a peninsula. How one can have an island on a strip of land remains unclear.

In a further example of the lack of the geographical knowledge of Eritrea and the repackaging of past lies, the article claims that Sawa is an Arab base secured by Saudi Arabia and the UAE for 30 years. When in actual fact Sawa is a training centre for Eritreans located in the eastern part of Eritrea.

This is not the first time that the Arab weekly has churned out articles packed with lies about Eritrea. In the past it has claimed that Iran had established a base in the Dahlak Islands, that Egypt had deployed thousands of troops in Eritrea and many more.

If a mere perfunctory review of the article can reveal such glaring inaccuracies, one wonders what a more forensic examination of the article would unravel.

It is a sad reflection of the era of ‘fake news’, where people who have absolutely no knowledge of the subject matter at hand, have the audacity not only to churn out unsubstantiated drivel, but unabashedly present themselves as ‘experts’ on topics they have little or no knowledge of.

It goes without saying that, whoever is behind this childish ploy to stir up conflict in the region through such amateurish articles— is bound to fail.
